Where to stay in Darwin?
Where's a good place to stay in Darwin?

I have stayed at the same place several times and it is not cheap but quite nice. I stayed there the first time because I did not book ahead and arrived on Darwin Cup Weekend and got the second to last room in the city (no joke). A European countess and entourage tried two persons after me at the airport and ended up staying at the Humpty Doo Tavern. So just used the same one again and again.

It is centrally located near the War Memorial with individual chalets.

I like to be able to get the vehicle close to the room or cottage, prefer separate cottages, chalets, or maisonette type places compared to big hotels full of 'standard' boring rooms. Ideally the accomodation should have kitchenette facilities too.

Darwin does not seem like a cheap city to stay in however.

I will be staying at such a place again and again and interested in what people have used and recommend. Thanks.

Theres a really nice accomodation complex right next door to where Bakes lives, very select guests, and the rates are suprisingly low, it mainly cateres to the international set but if you can put on a good accent i'm sure you could stay there. jumping

Does Bakes live near the Darwin jail or an illegal immigrant centre?

No no, I'm not at Coonawarra, I turned down that house Big Grin. I'm on the RAAF base Frowner

We used to stay at the Novotel Atrium (sp?) not to expensive and good rooms. Cullen bay has some nice appartments as well.

No we turned up at the house on Coonawarra on the day of our move. Took one look inside and said NO! So they offered us a 4 beddy on the base. The house is just as old but has more room. Pop in any time mate. beer

Nitro - I stay at a motel in town called the Asti. Its a bit old and rough and you might have to engage in a conversation with a crotchety old fat smelly French woman (if you are unlucky) who seems to own the joint but apart from that its quite OK. Got a pool and 24 hr reception (with beer for sale) and its quite clean and all. Best of all - it's only a couple blocks to town and easy walking distance to Cullen Bay in the other direction. Easy 'falling distance' into bed when out on the piss, which I frequently seem to be, when I stay there... give it a shot, not too bad mate. Smiler
