I will be in Australia next May and want to go on dfown to N.Z. for a Thar - Chamois Hunt. Who has the best hunts for the money? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I can highly recommend Tim Buma - New Zealand Back Country Outfitters. I hunted with him in June this year. He provided a great service.

He posts here, so maybe you can ask him some questions.

Shoot 'till it's dead, especially if it bites.

Top-Predator,

I would like to shoot a Thar that is a good representative of the species, at least 12 inches. Am i expecting too much?

If you have the money , some guide will supply you the animal you want . Time is money everywhere , so decide how much you are prepared to spend and work back from there to plan your hunt .

I have hunted with Tim Buma and can recommend him , but then I have no experience of any other guiding services to compare .

We hunted Tahr last week, and I'm hunting Chamois tomorrow.

My friend and I do tahr and chamois hunts, as well as fishing, sightseeing, etc. on the S. Island. I am in North Carolina and he lives about 2 hours from Queenstown on the S. Island. These trips are custom tailored to the client's desires, so things are pretty flexible. You would be staying in Heorge's home and with oru friends when you are not in a tent or cabin on the hill. Also availible is local tours, helocopter tours, duck shooting, goat culling, wallbe shooting, etc, etc. Depends on the season, the length of the trip, and the client's desires.

One thing i will say is that we hunt free range, so you must be fit. THis is real hunting and not what most of the articles in magazines portray.

A 12" tahr would be great, but it is a very lofty goal. We always shoot for a 12 when we are on the hill, but a bull that is 11"+ is mature and a nice specimen. George gets a very high percentage of 12 inchers, but as this is all free range, there are no gurantees.
