remglenn.338 Federal Loads - Aussie powders
Just after some load suggestions for 338 Federal using ADI powders. Going to mainly use 200gr Nosler accubond. Be interested to pick others brains.I am trying 46gr AR2206H at present. Average velocity is 2520fps. Only running in barrel at present but accuracy appears to look promising. Rifle is a Tikka T3 stainless lite.

AndyrooHi Glenn.
50gr of Win 748 should get you around 2600fps. My Hodgdon Manual states that as their maximum. A slightly slower powder like AR2208 may yield a few more fps with heavier projectiles. IMR 4350 is another good powder.

remglennThanks Andyroo. Not got any manuals with data in them for this calibre. TP got this rifle for my son who is based in Darwin for the present. He wanted a good knockabout rifle with enough grunt to handle the odd buff but has not shot anything bigger than my 06. The minimal shooting I have done with the Tikka has shown it to be very pleasant to shoot for such a light rifle. No problems to shoot prone. Scoped with a 2.5x8 Leupold VX3. Will let you know how it shoots.

AndyrooThat's a good resource Gadge. Those loads listed are pretty mild for maximum. Are you bound to ADI powders? I use Hodgdon myself mainly using BLC-2.

Not so. BL-C(2) is similar in burning rate to AR2206, but it's a ball powder, made by St Marks Powder in the US.
AR2006 is an extruded powder, and not sold by Hodgdon. A modified version, AR2206H, is sold as H4895. Slightly slower than 2206 though.
Andy, yep ADI are by far the most commonly used here, being local. Hodgdon powders aren't available at all here, nor are IMR, but Winchester, Alliant and Vihtavuori are around. Though availability can be a bit spotty.

Yeah I never thought they were exactly the same but for practical purposes they are. Can anyone accurately clarify this?

Similar in application, but different technologies.
Ball powders are all double base, extruded are usually single base. ADI extruded powders are all single base.
So load data is NOT interchangeable.

Another good source for researching loads is Steves pages:
http://stevespages.comHe has a 338 Federal section with a few different powders that are available in Australia
