Tex21Oddball question
Hello all,
Forgive me if I'm asking a dumb question but, I've got a hat I bought a zoo last summer that is supposed to be an "Aussie style" hat. You know, oilskin sort of thing with about a 3.25" brim and a leather cord that hangs down around your neck to keep it from blowing off your head. Its a damned comfortable hat and I love it. If it is an Aussie hat, you guys sure know how to make one. However, it has a snap on the left side that holds the brim to the left side of the crown. Why do I want to fold it up like that? Is that a style in Australia or does this have some practical purpose?
Once again, I apologize that this so off the wall. But its not everyday you find some guys from down under to interact with. Any ideas about the hat?

Easy_RollinsWhy the Aussie hats had the brim turned up 101.

It was so a soldier could shoulder his rifle without hitting the hat,in our case a .303 SMLE.

It has become an Aussie icon like football, meatpies and Holden cars.

Tex21Cool!
Like I said, it's a great hat. Keeps the Texas sun off my shoulders and face during the summer and has kept the damned fall drizzley rain off my head so far. What more can you ask for?
Thanks for the lesson.
Tex

Richard KymbleTex21,
To make it a ridgey digde Aussie slouch hat you need to get some kangaroo feathers and stick them on it. Be the real deal then

The Diggers' hat has seen a lot of action since its introduction more than a century ago. Many an enemy soldier has come to hate it and many an ally has come to revere it. And, for a foreigner to be presented with a Diggers' hat has long been regarded as a token of fair dinkum mateship.

Doc1972The lighthorse still wear the emu plumes to this day. At least at 2nd/14th in Brisbane they do.
Except the horse is now made of steel and aluminium and sprouts a .30 and .50 cal on top.
