i know its been done to death.

but a guy is buying a Savage (most likely) from me and wants a great scope to go with it. The budget seems to be upwards to a $1000 or more.

He wants it for spotlighting foxes on the family farm with ranges out to 300 yds plus. He seems keen on Leoplod but unsure of which one, which reticle, what power etc. and even seemed a bit unsure whether the Leopold was the best for his purposes.

so before I sell him one, any opinions would be most welcomed.

He's also willing to spend more than the money I said for the Savage 12 VLP for a very accurate rifle.

Apparently, the Savage can now be bought in 1:9 twist. I was going to recommend the old version

VX3 4.5-14X or 6.5-20X

Ive got the vx3 6.5-20 x 50 with the varmint reticle on my 7mm08. it does the job very well indeed, fine in daylight can be a bit sketchy in twilight being so fine.
pretty much all of the time lamping with it its fine, i suppose i'm used to it now.
ive got a nightforce on one rifle and have lined up a nice swarovski for another.

of all three for lamping i get on with them all, for twilight and time with dim lamps or foxes just on the outside of the beam i would have to say swarovski hits the button every time and as for day time they all do the job nicely.

i do the same sort of shooting and have found the 6-18 leupold to be excellent with the fine cross hair. or you could go the 6.5-20.

I use a 8 x 56 for my spotlighting and would recomend this power for any spotlight shooting.

Yes, I do alot of spotlighting and use a Meopta Meostar R1 3-12x56. That scope sits on around 7 power 98% of the time, it never goes above 8X and rearely below 6X and works brilliantly in that power range when spotlighting.

The 8x56 Khales would have to be one of the most popular spotlighting scopes around and I think it would be an ideal scope for a spotlighting rifle.

foxes are very small at even 250m in an 8x scope, you would be handicapping yourself with a fixed 8x on a flat shooter like the 22/250. i stick with my aforementioned recommendations...

I am very happy with leupold 8.5-25x50 on my .243 Heavy barrel rem and thats what I will on a 22/250 when I get one again. I have had a 6.5-20x40 on one and that was a great scope to.

$1,000+ budget? Tell him to get a Ziess 6,5-20x50
