My guess.

In the field he looked like a monster but he was far away. But on these photos about 22 inches.

Just out of interest I measured the distance between the out side edge of one ear to the outside edge of the other ear on a couple of mounted heads , the average length was about sixteen inches , so taking that into account I would have to agree he's about 22 inch . If I where to hazzard a guess I would say that would make him about five years old .

Ears are forward and antlers laid back..thus your theory while worth some merit points could be somewhat wrong...pic pespective and all that...there is another way to do the measure thing though...Nitro knows, Wink

Yeah , I was taking into account his antlers where somewhat laid back , just trying to help trying to put things into persective for our friends who are'nt that familiar with Sambar .

42" Sambar shot in Adilabad, India -- 1950s. The bastards have ruined it all.

The head back and the fact the points might not be visible in the photo might add some inches as Gryphon has suggested.

I take it the very best heads taken out of the bush in Victoria run 31â€-32â€. Is that about right?

The ADA trophy register shows the biggest Sambar at 233 douglas points. Does anyone have an idea how long those antlers would be?

There’s a shed antler by the fireplace at the Blue Duck that goes about 32†and has a massive base. I don’t dare to dream of ever seeing one that big in the bush.

Those older pictures show racks big as our elk. Had me wondering how big they might get if left to grow into old age.

Impressive!!!

Georgeld,no they dont get anywhere near big elk at all, sambar normally have only 6 points and as said previously a big fella down under will be only about 30" plus. Anything around 24" and up is considered an achievment with sambar though.
