You do not need to pay bribes to do business successfully. Minimum wages are a "must", and those who try to dodge this are prosecuted. Many immigrants find this out the hard way and pay a big price. My 3 kids earned a good wage as teenagers and had a great start to life. At 25, my son has bought a house and no student debt! Has a good job, married .....
That property has been attracting a lot of attention from the US and other countries. It is located near a hub of tourist attractions and will be a great investment in the long term. When you look around that region now and compare it to the isolation that prevailed 30 years ago, it is obvious that this property has great potential over the next 20+ years.
Many people in the West have no understanding of the political spectrum around the world. "Far left" is used loosely and incorrectly.
One of the first characteristics of any "leftist" political party or environment is the dismantling of capitalism, competition etc. As long as a society is based on Capitalism with no barriers such as tariffs, licenses etc. it cannot be "left". NZ is one of the easiest countries to do business in.
"FAR Left" means that active socialist and communist policies are implemented. Private property is not a right and very limited. Even China, Russia, Vietnam etc. do not have such policies anymore.
Jacinda Ardern and the labour party have a policy that opposes Oligarchy. They also support equity and oppose perpetual systemic poverty and social discrimination. That is not "Far Left". It is basic human decency, which the "right" lacks.
In the 33 years I have lived in NZ, I have found the country to be more liberated from tariffs, license regulations etc. Most old public sector establishments like Telecom, NZ Rail, Coal, etc. have become productive private entities. Labour government has not initiated any policies to nationalise any sector.
Kiwi bank has been setup as competition to the giant global banks who are plundering this country with high interest, fees and profits. They make more profits here than in Australia, US, Europe etc. The middle class and farmers in particular are being fleeced by the big banks.
I have also noticed that NZ is far more diverse and multicultural. The economy and businesses now involve a real mix of nationalities who have immigrated in the last 30 years. The population has increased by about 40%+ mainly through immigration.
NZ is now under threat from the Far Right. Racial divisions are being instigated by the Act party for decades and the National party has joined this brinkmanship. There are serious efforts to make this a white supremacist society again. Efforts are now being made to marginalise Māori people again and deny them their constitutional rights.
NZ is a fantastic country to live in for those who PRACTICE the principles of freedom & equality.
The last 6 years have been the BEST for me in terms of the economy. Our family income is the highest it has ever been. We have been able to pay down debt significantly after the 9 year misery under a National government, we have been able to put a new roof, bathroom and kitchen in our home.
Count your blessings!
