derfRe: Quail in the NT
Bakes, I just went through this same Q&A period myself here in BC. I saw a couple of Quail that were huge compared to the regular ones. They turned out to be the California varient and a few weeks ago I also found out that a friend of mine in the Okanogan would like them thinned out on his farm. Com-on Oct.1!!

BakesI saw 5 of these little buggers today (a covey if you will)just outside the base. Its not the first time I've seen quail here. Does anybody know what type they would most likely be?

dwhunterBakes,
Do you have any photos of those tasty birds?

We have a few different species here in the states and a picture would possibly help with identification.

BakesNo I don't. I think we have two types of quail here. I came home and went to bed and didn't have the energy to do a search to find out more

. I'll do some looking on the net tonight.

NitroXI once went to a lovely restaurant locally and had a quail as an entre crusted heavily with Asian five spices and it was simply divine.
Coincidently I saw a stubble quail on the same day as you running along in the wheat cover crop in the vine rows. It was the first I have seen for a long long time. Jumped off the motorbike and back tracked to see if I had run over its nest but couldn't find out. Hopefully not damaged (yet anyway). Not sure when they lay eggs. They have never been common in the area but every now and again one used to find a paddock with good numbers.
