BakesWhat do you think of this?
I have a mate with a Mauser for sale. Its an Israelie (sp?

) mauser in .308. Now what I was thinking was a rebarrel to 9.3x62 and fitting a ghost sight. The thought is that it would make a good little knock about sambar rifle for if/when I get posted down south. What do you think? wothwhile project?

okie johnI've got one. The Israelis built them properly, so if the price is right you'd be better off to get it and keep it a 308. Ammo is only a bit more than 22 LR, and the 308 has enough punch to be a serious game cartridge. If you want to build a 9.3x62, I'd start with an 8x57. Hope this helps, Okie John.

muzzaI presume the rifle is an Israeli rebarrell of a K98 German Mauser. Why not just use it in 308 Win and make sure of your shot placement ? Save a heap of money and grief setting a new rifle up , and a 308 projectile in the right place will knock over any game animal you are likely to encounter in Australia.

BakesYeah but I don't like the 308 Muzza

NitroXI'd save up a bit longer for a 9.3 mm CZ550.

derfBakes, I liked those Israelie 308s too. If it is cheap enough why not buy it and flip it and put the profit towards what you really want. derf

Mike375Bakes,
I will email the link below as we are about lose the forum
Scroll down a few posts on this thread and look at the 458 BRNO. The bloke brought the rifle around here the other day and it is better in the flesh. A lot of BRNOS in 375 and 458 have this sort of wood. He paid $850 for the gun.
http://www.australianhunting.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1818There is nearly always a 375 or 458 BRNO for sale in the SSAA magazine each month. Horsely Park Gun Shop use to literally have crates of them. Usual story.....the recoil of a 375 or 458 is way down when you fire someone elses rifle a few times at a rock....as compared to shooting your own rifles and developing loads etc.

Except for easy conversion of 30/06 based rifles I simply can't see what 9.3 X 62 has over a 375 H&H.
By the way a 458 Win is a great big banger. I have owned 3 of them at different times, all Model 70s. The 400 grain Speer with 70 grains of 2206 does right on 2100 f/s and shoots beautifully in an accurace 458. The same load does 2000-2050 with 500 grain Hornadies from 22 inch Model 70s and shoots just under the 400 grainer at 100 yards. 70 grains of 2208 does about 100 f/s less with either bullet.
