Black Hills 77gr. 223 Rem
I just finished reading an article on the 77gr. 223. Rem (5.56x45 Nato) round by Black-Hills being used in Iraq. Im interested in buying some to try. My question is.... I have a Remington 700 that has a 20in. bbl with 1in9 twist and a Smith&Wesson AR15 with a 16in. bbl also with a 1in9 twist. Can I expect any accuracy with this round? Any additional info also please.

I have a Savage 12BVSS with the 1:9 twist that handles them well, around half an inch at a hundred for five shots.

Spendy, though.

The remmy may shoot them fine, but the 16 incher probably will not do very well.

MV and twist rate are key-the 20 inceher will probably do around 26-2700, while the 16 incher will probably not exceed 2500, which may result in insufficient stability for worthwile accuracy.

My AR NM rifle with a 1/9 twist handles 75/77 grn BTHPs well, my 16 inch will not -unless 6-8 MOA and wobbly holes makes one happy.

the 20 inch w/ 556 match chamber produces 2650 while the same load in the 16" 556 makes just under 2500.

I shoot 75 grain Hornady bthp in both my 20 and 16 inch 1-9 AR's. I can get 2700-2750 fps from the 20 inch with RL15/Varget at 2700 and an extra 50 fps using BLC-2 which is not quite as accurate at close range but better over 600yds. It holds up to 900 yards which is as far as Ive shot it.

The 16 inch will do almost 2600 fps but there are better loads for it using 60 grain nosler partition and almost any 55 grain. I still have a few TBBC I am hording.
