After many years of blaming loads, wind conditions, or shooter error for a lost shot, we have found that the erector tube will move a .001 or so occasionally and it will result in a .060 or larger flyer on the target. Our matches are often decided in less than .010 in a 5 shot 5 group match. You can use a scope checker, holds 2 scopes on a rifle. Adjust and shoot both to the same point of impact. Shoot several groups and you will find that one scope is now aimed at a different point of impact. For years we just blamed ourselves because it was an infrequent occurance. Many different mods have been done to scopes to prevent this with some success. Locking the erector tube is the only sucessful thing that we have found at the present. A group of optical engineers in Japan with the help of a wealthy Japanese Doctor has produced the March scope with a different internal design. They used EV or EF camera quality glass also. Early reports have been good. A $1400 scope, but you pay $1000 for a Leupy and pay $500 to freeze it and add the external mounts.

interesting, I have some pretty pricy optics and I have noticed this with my night force. thought it was any thing but the scope.

Is that the same sort of thing Arnold Jewell was addressing with his locking down the erector cells and providing external adjustment conversions?
Or, something like that? Another gunsmith in Texas is doing the same thing.

It seems to be the current "thing to do" in BR.
Several prominent shooters are experimenting with "freezing" their scopes. That's what BR is all about. The never ending experiments in the quest for accuracy.
Be advised that "freezing" a Leupold scope voids the factory lifetime warranty. This doesn't bother me but I just thought I'd mention it.

The freezing that is done on the Competition series is reversible and if needed you could get warranty work.By the way the March scope is $2100, not $1400 as I posted.
