Toomany ToolsI haven't been there in 20 years, but I've traveled extensively in India. I was never very comfortable flying Air India as they're aircraft always appeared poorly maintained. I remember one notable flight on a Scarebus 310, from Bombay to Delhli. When we arrived at the gate I saw the plane, about 50 yards away out on the ramp, was undergoing some engine repairs. The gate attendant explained over the PA system that the flight would be delayed 45 minutes or so. I watched from the window as two shirtless "mechanics" dressed only in sandals, loincloths (think Ghandi) and head scarfs were diligently working away whilst perched on a maintenance stand fabricated from bamboo. After 30 minutes or so the engine cowling was closed, the bamboo stand was carried away, and we were allowed to walk out and board the jet. As I climbed the stairs I quickly counted at least a dozen "scab" patches on the leading edges and fuselage, most likely the result of bird strikes. It was a very long short flight to Delhi. India is a wonderful country with great people, but I'd rather fly with their Air Force.
