Skill is a Saving Grace
Amazing Piloting Skills Recover Aircraft . . .

AND

Of course a big ol pot of luck.

Not all get to live and talk about their error and making it through.

Perfect thing for weather days and "There I was" story times.

I'm sure there are many dead and banged up pilots that would not be that way

IF

They had not gotten themselves into the situation they got into.

I remember a line that was repeated many a time in,
"Flight Facts"
Accident and Incident section;

'Instructor allowed situation deteriorate beyond the ability to recover control of the aircraft . . .'

Followed by whatever sort of object was struck by the aircraft.

Many a time the ground would not rise up and smite thee aircraft if one did not
Run out of

altitude

airspeed

I think it is very telling of part of the draw of these races that the producers had a camera on the pilot's wife while he was flying. Nothing like filming the immediate reaction of a loved one watching the death of there beloved. Panders to a small percentage of folks who attend these races on the hopes of witnessing carnage firsthand. Same a NASCAR events.
