Carrier found -- USS Hornet
The late Paul Allen's searchers found her in remarkably good shape more than three miles down off the Solomans.

As part of the operation to locate and protect CV5 USS Yorktown and note the location as a WAR GRAVE they also located the wrecks of the Japanese carriers Hiryu, Soryu, Kaga and Akagi, that Yorktown participated in sending to the bottom before her own loss.

The Yorktown was believed to have been sunk on four different occasions as each time she was Last seen by Japanese aircrews as "dead in the water and afire", but she had an amazing damage control system and men determined to extinguish the fires and keep her afloat!
But in each subsequent attack she was seen making 20kts plus and launching aircraft with no sign of fire or smoke!
So each time the Japanese believed they were attacking a "Fresh" undamaged carrier!

It was all a real mind-fuck to the Japanese, as they were baffled as to where all these carriers were coming from!

One of the secrets of these ships was that when under attack, the first step of damage control was purging all the fueling lines and purging the vapors from the fuel tanks, this sounds complicated but all was accomplished with a semi-automated system where several hundred pounds of liquid CO2 was dumped into the fuel system effectively making the fuel system non-flammable and greatly reduced the likelihood of an uncontrollable fire (as on USS Lexington)

If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day!
Those who manage to provoke themselves into other activities have only themselves to blame.

We sailed out of Auckland Nov 18, up to New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon's, Papua New Guinea, and Conflict islands before heading back into Cairns and down the inside of the barrier reef. We saw all kinds of WWII sites, dove on many including Million Dollar Point...and we did see the ships out there searching for vessels...BINGO but we missed the find!!
Awesome experience!!
Cheers,
