You push on the rudder it pushed back, you push harder it sticks.. release it and it returns to normal.
An aircraft that's been sitting... and not properly maintained before flying? THAT is an act of stupidity...

surestrikeWord on the street is that it was a Yaw Damper that was installed wrong/backwards.
I don't know enough about yaw damper installation to make even a semi intelligent statement as to the veracity of that rumor.

Got a ride on a TAG Angola 1011 out of Paris to Luanda many years ago. (Yeah, I could either resign or ride TAG and I really needed the job...) At least it had a Portuguese crew up front. The damned thing did the hula for eight hours all the way to Africa. Not all the time and nowhere near as radical as that TU, but every now and then it would throw a little wiggle into the act. Luckily, they had free booze all the way south and I'd just have another drink and try to ignore it...
African air carriers scare the shit out of me. And from what I've seen of the Russians and Ukrainians and such types, so do they.

If you've ever trained any Russian aircrews you'd know that your fears are warranted. For a short time at UAL we had a training contract with several Russian airlines. Here are some things I found out about Eastern Block pilots and airlines. The captain is god and will not be questioned. The equipment is flown with a mechanical defect if ordered to be flown the captain has very little say in the matter.
But here is one that scared the crap out of me above all others. Russian pilots will not go around. It is almost impossible to make them go around for weather, traffic, unstablized approach, what ever the case may be. When questioned I always got the same answer. To conduct a go around is an ARRESTABLE offense at many Russian airfields and at the very least the captain will be held and drug tested if he goes around!!
To which I always introduced the American colloquialism of YGTFSM!!
