This is a beautiful rifle! I have one just like it but with the longer barrel and this one looks handier! These rifles are a perfect platform for the 45-70.

The first one I got was the 1976 Centennial model, and have had many of them since.
All mine had 22 inch barrels, as does this one. I also had one Lyman Model with 28 inch barrel and long scope; those are really rare now.
One thing about #1s is that even careless reloaders don't have to worry, As much.
I used to load them so hot that you couldn't hold on to the forearm.

I bought one, magnificent shape, about 20 years back. I loaded it to the gills, 350 at 2300, 405 at 2100. The gun needed about 3 more pounds for those loads.
It was so pristine I wouldn't hunt with it.
Like a fool I sold it, but bought an 1895 I don't mind getting scratched in the brush

Seems no one wants these any more; just a few years ago they were very salable; these young guys don't want wood stocks or 45-70s or single shots. My local gun shop does not stock anything with wood on it. No demand.

I had one of those Lyman 28in barreled rifles. Should have kept it for its toughness and accuracy.
All my 45-70s have wood stocks. Including an original
1885 SS and a 1920s 1886.

It's a shame. Had 375 H&H, 450-400 , loved them both. Now I have a 450 Nitro, love it too. Wonderful guns, wish I had kept my other 2, but they are getting too pricey for me these days.

havent been in a gun shop in ages. sad to hear that wood stock comment. going to hell in a handbasket. wish i had to
