WARNING about 6 x 47 Lapua
Might affect few of us but a friend of my has accidentally chambered a round of 6 x 47 lapua into a 243 Winchester rifle which he also own by accident in Bisley today.

Result was a near big accident.

I don't think this has been reported anywhere so I will now post it on 6mmBR.com and Benchrest Central.

I have both these calibers and will have to seperate all the componenets with colour coded labels.

Easily done when bringing a few rifles for checking zeroing in one sitting.

Steffano

I sense this might be relevant if your are range officer at your 300m range in Italy correct ?

Is 6 x 47 gaining popularity in Italy ?

Yes it is, for safety we check the components of the shooter, even if it is done with the curiosity technique by me (Hi, what are you going to shoot, may I see? and so on).
I'll give the info at the range next week. However the responsability for an accident is of the shooter.
I know that there is some movemnt for6,5x47, I'll look during Saturday how is the movement during an international bench rest competition that I have to manage.

Ah, the other day, somebody on our range chambered (and fired) a 6x47 SM (different to the Lapua round) in a .243 Win.

Fortunately, no serious consequences resulted, but the barrel had to be unscrewed to remove the case from the chamber... It looked odd, with hardly any neck at all...

Could have been worse, might have been a 6.5x47 in a 243 chamber..... That would ruin your whole day. Eeker

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Hi Steve

I went for both
6.5 x 47 and
6 x 47
some 02 years ago

The 6.5 x 47 was built for th McQueen's Specfically and it was sold to a friend last week.
Here is a link to it built on a TRG-22

www.reloadingsolutions.com/19.html

The 6 x 47 Lapua was built on a Remington Short and it shot very tight but only if I jam it to the lands. Effectively it was a single shot.
MISTAKE...........

I sold it to a friend who does not mind this issue. He is a very confident hunter and have been stalking with it very successfully until he informed me of this issue of cross chambering.

There should be a register some where alerting shooter of this possibility.

I have had numerous feedback overnigth from many shooters mainly from the US not aware of this issue.

I suppose the benchrest crowd and tactical shooters do not realy mix (wonder why)

But I can see this being a real DANGER.

Hi Claret is it possible to chamber a 6.5 into a 6 mm ?

If that's the case then this problem will be a real issue when the first commercial 6.5 x 47 batch is delivered.

At the moment the problem is limited to handloaders but when factory ammo is widely available and 243 being such a common round around the world ...............

I heard from a ISSF 300m shooter that Norma is considering this round as an addition to their Black diamond line.

It's a good reminder and I can see it's possible but there are many many combinations that you can do that sort of thing with eg 222rem in 223 etc.

There is no substitute for careful handling procedures and being especialy careful if you have potential interchangability. I shoot 243 and 7-08 and just recently despite great care identintified a 243 round in my belt carrier when I was shooting 7-08. I like to think that my handling made it a non issue but do something often enough.....

I agree we should do what all good hunters do 01 gun and 01 caiber. Easily said than done though .................

The temptation to play around is just too great don't you agree...

243 will chamber in a 308 and fire.

A 308 will chamber and fire in a 25-06 or a 270.

There are lots more examples.
