hey, im going to turkey wild boar hunting (driven) i've shot a lot of deer but thats always been stalking. i was wondering if anyone knew what i should expect. e.g guns used, what happens if you miss etc.

If it is a driven hunt - strong likelyhood you will be using shotgun and slug, if you do not take your own rifle.

Moslem country - so do not expect a great deal of interest in your dead pigs, getting a boar caped, salted and ready to be shipped could be a bit of a lottery. Take LOTS of photos and try to get a guide to remove the teeth for you.

I had a week of hunting north of Antalaya some years ago - plenty of pigs, but very used to being driven, they would pass the line 45 mins before we could hear beaters!

Highest success rates are normally from sitting up/stalking at night. Otherwise, good bag numbers were not that common on driven hunts.

I've heard that importing shotguns to Turkey is difficult and rifles are probably not allowed.

thanks IanF thats really helpful. we are very lucky as we will be the first people to shoot the ground so hopefully they will not be wise to being driven. "wildboar" thank you also i thhink we are borrowing out there to avoid this now. i hear they are quite large out there?

It runs without problems.
I am not for the wild boar game hunt only in Turkey, but with the shotgun or rifle there is no problem. Also the hunting districts very good, actually.

Normally, the hunting day - 3-4 wild boar driven. The areas are really unexploited and wild. It allows to expect the good trophies.

we are going in march. is this a good time of year? what sort of distance will we be shooting them from and is there any danger of beaters/dogs?



also if you miss do they charge into you bearing in mind they will never have been hunted before?

Everywhere I've been in Turkey (I can only speak for the Med coastal region from Istambul around to Alanya) they are hunted. Mostly by local's with shotgun and dogs.
Its difficult country inland and it may be that the boar haven't been exposed to formal driven hunts but, if they get into the crops, they will surely have been shot at IMO.

ive just got back. i used a 7mm some used .375s and one even used a .416. we got 23 boar between 7 of us with a couple of 28cm plus tusks. we were the first to hunt the area so they had no fear of humans which meant many just ran back through the beaters. i have to say it was the most exciting hunting i have ever experience. oh and several wolves were seen and one shot which was very exciting.

Sounds good.
Even if they know humans they sometimes run back trough the beaters. They learn very fast that it's much easier to survive this way.

Ok,we,ll give you a day or two to recover from the raki.

haha no way they've got some mean tusks...the dogs that the beaters used go pretty roughed up every now and again and they are bred for it!
