calgarychef1Fantastic photos, I was amazed at the number of birds. Grouse hunting is a lot different here. The birds are in small groups and you drive from one field to another then search for them in "likely" places. Such as the edges of combined fields, old homesteads etc.
thanks for sharing!

NorsemanExcellent photos.
Tell us about how the hunt is conducted, I assumed that these driven hunt by beater's and the lab are the retriever of grouse?
Would a pointer be suitable if one were to hunt solo?
Last, tell us about the camera.
Awesome photo's. One should consult with Double Gun Journal as well as Peterson magazine group.

acteonDriven grouse shooting take place with a line of 8 guens positioned in traditionnal stone-built butts across the hills, approximately 40 yards from each other.
One mile from there and forming a big circle with "flankers" and their flags on the sides, more or less 20 beaters start walking through the moors toward the line of guns.
Grouse fly fast, averaging 110km/h, even faster with wind.
Pickers-up and their labs or spaniels collect the birds on completion of each drive.
There are 5 drives a day.
Driven grouse shooting is one of the most exciting, spectacular, challenging, prestigious and ...expensive form of shooting in the world.
It only take place on vast estates holding a good to high density of birds.
A fairly good shot will normally achieve a ratio of 3 cartidges per bird in August when season open (on the "Glorious" 12th), and up to 10 or more cartridges per bird in November when grouse flies in big packs and horrible weather.
Grouse are exclusive to Scotland -where moors are often hilly and even steep - and some regions of northern England such as Yorkshire where ground is more flat and hold huge densities of birds.
The daily bags are averaging 50 to 100 brace a day on good scottish estates. Well over 100 or 200 on the best english estates.
This year a record bag of over 1000 brace was obtained by a team of 8 guns in one day on a famous moor of Co Durham.
On areas where grouse are in rather low numbers, shooting take place either with a line of walking-up guns, or with 2 guns walking with a pair of pointers.
