Personally the only thing I can criticize about this story is to shoot an animal from a Helicopter

What was the reasons that polar bear was shoot?

The official reason is that due to bad weather condition (very foggy) the officials were afraid of losing the animal in the fog and the bear could appear too close to inhabited area.

Shame on Islandic officials. This is the most embarrasing reason that I heard.

Let's get real here. If there was imminent danger to human life, they probably figured they had no choice. But then, I guess they don't have any Apex predators in Nebraska.
