My hunt for a big reindeer buck

AndersMy hunt for a big reindeer buck
Here's a couple of pics of my reindeer buck. As I wrote in an earlier post I did some prehunt scouting, and it really paid off.
After only two days of hunting I got this nice buck. It will hopefully score pretty good. Anyway it was a grand experience! Saw him first in the morning, but it took some hours before he moved to a more approachble position. One shot right on the shoulder brought him down on the spot.

SIKA98KCongratulations on your buck !
I was just thinking of the riot that would take place at home if I wanted to hang one of those heads on the wall.
A couple of friends[a Dane and an Irishman] are hunting for reindeer this week noreast[I think] of Hanestad.
Their last known destination was Styx nightclub in Elverum !

I did pack out the meat with the help of a friend two days ago, and I can still feel a lot of muscles I didn't know existed... Puh...

We have an agreement there, Ian! I think you'll need two trips to Norway. First capercaille in winter time, then reindeer later...
Thanks for replies, guys!
The buck was shot with my good ol' .30-06, Mike. A 165 grain Hornady Interbond was the recipie and worked fine as always..

Shot him broadside on 130 meters..
I still don't know were to put up such a head, but I'll find some space, Sika.. I live by myself, so the riot's just in my own brain.

Fallow BuckGreat stuff Anders.
Those Reindeer sure look like an interesting animal to hunt. How far did you have to pack the meat out to?

Trapper DaveFantastic Rack.
It must have very strong neck musculature to deploy that lot in an argument.
A nice trophy. One for the Bathroom I think, you can hang laundry on the tines to air dry

Well Done!

RobinOLocksleyGreat looking animal,Anders.Congratulations. How heavy such an animal would be? And how does the meat taste? Thanks.

Their one of my definitive favourites here in Norway! This packing was actually not the worst, but still a little over 4 km. And with a weight of 85 kg it sure was enough for the two of us..

The packing out is the only drawback with a reindeer hunt.

Good luck, LHO, and remember a report for us!
This buck would go around 160 kg live weight, Robin. Difficult to describe the taste, but it's very good eating for sure. Similar to red deer maybe, but with added flavour of the mountains.

donnerNice Anders!!100% a gold medal reindeer!where i norway was it shot?
27 August 2009, 13:13
AndersI hope so!
If not then I don't know what a gold medal should look like..

It was shot in Norefjell-Reinsjøfjell.
Not the most difficult area and wildest animals. A bit like Forollhogna, I guess.
This area is well known to produce good bucks. In addition there haven't been any hunting for bucks in four years. So when I got an offer for a tag, I couldn't resist.

Fallow BuckAnders, do you cape the trophy then bone the meat out on site or just quarter the carcass for the jog home?
27 August 2009, 16:26
AndersI did cape the trophy and carried it out together with all my equipment. The next day a friend of mine joined me. We didn't bone out the meat. Just cut it in suitable parts to fit in the ruck sack..

If we had boned out the meat, it would have lowered the weight, but it's harder to get the meat hung when getting home, I think.
This afternoon I have plans to boil the scull, but this is just temporary, sine my plans is to get it mounted.. I have just started construction work with a trophy room as an add on to my house. And I need something to put on the walls you know..
