I appear to have reached a slight crux in my internet hunting - namely boredom!

After 10years of avid posting and reading (well 9 really seeing as I've not been very active recently) I find myself mourning departed friends (as in no longer posting) Deerdogs, Fritzkraut, Montero, Griff, Matts, et al. I suspect many continental bretheren have moved to their native sites and perhaps the UK contingent have moved to Stalking GB or whatever it is.

Anyways in order to inject some spice into my stalking I have decided that 2011 is the year that I will shoot a buck with iron sights. This is not just for the sake of providing some extra challenge but also because my eyesight is going south at a rapid rate.

So here's a thought - 'The AR Iron Buck Club' Membership by virtue of a photo of a buck, iron sighted rifle and a solemn promise you didn't just take a scope off! Would be a good sticky or even dare I say it another forum.

Quite apart from the requirement for some hunting (as opposed to sniping) This could also provide new and engaging topics for discussion. Themes such as 'What foresight for fallow?' 'V or U for low light hunting?' 'Euro irons provide greater clarity' ............ the permutations are endless. I can even see some 'Ethics of short range hunting' arguments.

Can I get some sort of dispensation for being blind in one eye (literally) and just short sighted in the other?

I could be restricted to leupold scopes only???

Brian,

If you were using a Leupold on those Suffolk Muntjac at dusk you would think you had gone blind in your good eye!

I'm on it.

The iron sights are going back on the Tikka and by sheer chance it's 200 and 300 yards at my club meet on Saturday.

The last three deer I've shot have been out of a highseat and over a hundred yards away.

Time for some hunting, as you say.

The only rifle I got with sights on, is my Sako 300WM. Wont that be a overkill for dear in UK.
Last time I brought it to UK I got a remark:

Here is mine from August the 1st 2010 that came to a call, shot at 50m quartering toward me. Rifle Merkel 140 double with ghost ring and fine silver bead. Caliber 9,3x74R, 19g (293gr) TUG bullet.

Great experience that I would suggest to anyone who can still use irons

*P.S. Just beware - once you have done it there is no way back - I mean it does change the way you look at things, meaning shooting the next one with a scoped rifle feels like a Murder One now

better sport to get buck in to close range!
Have bought me an old drilling in 8x57jr! Some of this days I gone take a buck with it!!

Good shout.

I will break out the open sighted .375H&H CZ550 and see if it still works on fallow. It did well last year!

Also need to use my new Browning BLR .308 with a red dot scope.

You only need one for open sights Brian, don't you?

Wow -
1894, I fully understand what you are thinking & had recently come to the same conclusion.

I have just had the Drilling re-blacked (she's looking gorgeous) & decided that my personal Roe hunting will be with irons when the light conditions permit.

Also got a NECG peep for the .375, so once I get the fore-sight height corrected, that is another one on the bucket-list!

I'm thinking that 60 -80m is likely to be my realistic maximum.

Must remember to soot the sights - it makes accurate shooting soooo much easier.

I'm touched by you words!

I'm afraid that my posting has petered off in recent years with the arrival of children and relocation to Dubai. I am reduced to plinking in the garden with my .22 HW57, and playing with my fishing rods. I've recently got into the local saltwater flyfishing scene in a big way - 20kg dorados and GTs on the fly!

Good luck with the open sights, I'm not sure my eyes are young enough.

I have been using old reliable Parker Hale 308 with a Zeiss Conquest so far this season BUT I am aware of my post above and will pull out the man's gun for my next outing.
