Moving to Scotland
My job may be taking me to Scotland. Can I bring my hunting guns and ammo from the US? I will am most enthused to make this move and do a bit of stalking and hunting in the UK, Spain and other parts of Europe.

Thanks for the guidance.

You will need to obtain a shotgun certificate and a firearms licence for your rifles. Assuming you are coming to Edinburgh contact Lothian and Borders police firearms licensing before you come. The alternative would be to book some shooting in Scotland before you come and arrange a visitors certificate and then lodge the guns at registered firearms dealer until you are granted a full certificate. Would just one or two shotguns and a rifle in the 243 to 30-06 range, but get your paperwork sorted ahead of time. I am sure others on here can sort out some stalking/ shooting for you.

Basically, Heym .270 has covered it..I would add that to get a Firearms certificate you will need two "referee's" to counter sign your application form and the associated passport photo's. These referee's must be people of "standing" and must have known you for at least 5 years...Different Police forces have different ideas as to who is deemed suitable, but as an example, I had a one of my managers from work and an ex Warrent Officer from the British Army sign mine..

It also helps to include copy's of any supporting documentation you may have, perhaps proof of membership from a hunting/or shooting clubs, hunter safety certificates, that sort of thing...

They will also probably ask you for signed statment from your local police or similar that you have no serious previous convictions..

What you're trying to demonstrate to the police is that you are a person of good standing, have had prior experience with firearms and have "good reason" to have them in the UK ie your going to go stalking..

If you want to PM me you contact details, I'd be happy to talk you through it...it sounds daunting, but I'm guessing its about on a par with the application process for a typical State CCW permit

Regards,

Peter
