We (I had a good friend of mine along) arrived late Saturday at the hunting area.

We had to hunt in a different area than last year, because all the bears they had on quota were shot last year (one in self defence)

We went out early Sunday afternoon, it was a 2 hour drive to the new hunting area near the town of Miercurea-Ciuc.
After the paperwork was done I met my guide Boti in town.
On the way up the mountain, the car broke down.

Boti told me that there were 8 bears coming to this bait, the biggest one between 350 and 400 points. A bear that size would be between 220kg and 250kg. That was exactly what I had booked. A hunt with a 400 point bear will be about €9000.

We were on the high seat just before 7p.m. The highseat was very comfortable with a big window towards the bait.

It was about 8.30 when we heard something behind us. About 20 minutes later, a big dark shadow came out of the forest and into the open. Boti opened the window and I got my 8mm Mag ready. He was feeding on corn, facing away from us. The red dot of the illum. Leupold found the right place when he moved foreward and turned broadside. I hit him right behind the shoulder.

We waited 15 minutes before we went down looking for him. It took us about 15 minutes to find him dead in very thick stuff, only about 20m from where I shot him.

Boti realised pretty quickly that this boar would make 450 points, if not even more.
We called some other guys with a trailer. The director of the local hunting organisation was with them and he told me that this bear will be at least 500 points........
We pulled him out and made some pictures.

He had a wonderful dark coat, almost black.
We loaded the bear and when we arrived in the village, there were at least 30 villagers waiting for us.
It was the biggest bear in this area for 18 years and the local director told me that they expect a bear of that size every 5-10 years. He was just over 350kg.

My hunt was done within a few hours. My friend was waiting for a shootable bear for the next 5 evenings without success........

We met some very nice and friendly people and this 3rd hunt in Romania will not be my last one!

Roger, that's one beautiful looking bear. I'd love to do a stag hunt in the Carpathians sometime. Romania seems like a great hunting destination.

cheers

Roger,
Great bear and good to see you posting here. You and a German friend hunted with me in Texas years ago. I hope everything is going well.

Wow! What a slug of a bear! You have spoiled it for me now! (In a good way).

Hope I can get one even sort of close to what you got.

Fantastic work.

Quality. Arrive at 5pm, up in the seat for 7pm, bear shot at 8.00pm.

What did you do for the rest of the week?

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

The bear was just before 9pm at the bait, so we waited about 2 hours.
I saw only 3 bears last year in a week, and only small ones. I was lucky this year, while my friend spent 5 nights in a high seat without a shot.
I had a great week. Late breakfast, sightseeing (castle, museum) and good food/beer every evening in a fine restaurant. And everything very cheap. Everything top!
