Re: Holt's December Auction
It took work, but I imagined using every piece of equipment on that damn catalogue!!
Deerdogs: Aren't some of those guns a little 'undervalued' to encourage bidding? Those mannlichers at 500-700 and the Holland bolt action for 1000-1500 seem a little 'cheap' if you know what I mean.
BTW have you ever witnessed a really decent gun going for a song when there is a lull in the bidding?
PARKER-HALE .308 (WIN.) 'SAFARI DE LUXE' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. C2334M, 22in. barrel, with leather sling. 70-90
----That is like 4 boxes of premium ammo in some places!

There is a nice looking 404 Jeffrey and a number of other classics such as 6.5x54MS up for grabs in Holt's December Auction.

These 6.5x54s go for virtually no money, and are a much superior rifle than the cheap modern rubbish found in most gunshops IMO.

Enjoy.

Are you planning to get another toy to torment us with, like that .318 last year?? I haven't forgotten man!
Have you put that beaut to use yet?

Looking at going to the viewing next week. it always turns up a couple of beauties. We can all dream...

I still haven't plucked up the courage to go to one of the actual auctions though as I'd stand no chance of sticking to my reserve limits!!

Oh, my goodness. These auctions bring uneasiness to a fellow that needs a 6,5x54. But London is a bit far away..

I lost a 404 Jeffery at Bonhams just minutes ago; I put in a shameless bid and it went for 1500 something . Online bidding is exciting.
But Holts do not have online bidding. I am beginning to panic.

And to Boghossian: Ive made some decent deals on auctions, filing shameless bids;
a Brno 21 8x60S for 200, a Ruger no 1 .280 Rem for 250, a M-Schnauer 6,5x55 incl clawmounted pecar for 400. There always is some flaws, but no big deals; the brno lacked the bolthead release spring, the ruger shot strings till I freed the barrel, the MS had a laquered stock and had 6,5x54 markings, but had been opened to 6,5x55 (and the stock now has a nice Clive Lemon oil finish). They all are really great rifles worth every cent.

And Deerdogs: Those Schnauers are something else, arent they.

Sounds good. I think that if you subscribe to the catalogue, you can make online bids Boha. Maybe I shouldn't have told you that....
BTW what is the trajectory of the 6.5x54 like? With heavy RN bullets it sounds like a bit of a close-range gun. But a classy rifle nonetheless. Anyone who turns up hunting with a canvas case and takedown gun etc. has a crafted tool not a 'high power rifle'...

You would be amazed at how low the rifles go for. Most people are there for the shotguns. That 318 cost me 800 and it has scrubed up beautifully.

It is a good job I am left handed or I would be in serious trouble with the crew chief.
