Righto guys it is really quiet at work and I have way too much time on my hands these days!! The result is that I end up day dreamingf about all the places I want ot go fishing and shooting, and dreaming up reasons that I NEED new guns!!

Double rifles have come up in conversation a few times recently and I wandered how many of you have doubles (SxS) and in what makes & calibres?

Photo's would be great.

Is there a dealer that has anyof the Chapuis rifles on the web? I'm running out or sites to look at!!

Don't go there! A whole new level of expense and potential heartache.

If you hanker for this sort of thing then look at drillings at the auction houses such as Holts etc. Cheaper and probably of more use.

Saw one at my smith last week, used but in exellent shape. A Chapuis s/s in 9,3x74 with a S&B 1,5-6x42 in swing mounts.
Came to the shoulder like a shotgun !

If it wasn´t for the crate of tropies coming in from RSA this spring, I guess I would be tempted more than I could take.

I own an old very filligran made double build in 1924 in Suhl. Caliber is 8x60RS.
Fitted with a Schnidt&Bender 1,25-4x20, it is a fine outfit for driven hunts on boars and red deer. Picture will follow next week.

I all honest I'm ne seriously looking just pipe dreaming. I have a coupleof other projects (small bore hammerguns) that are live at the moment that are much more vital to my continued peace of mind as a hunter. Watch this space in the next few weeks.

The Fallow you took made some excellend steaks and we made up 60lbs of sausages on Sunday with some freinds with all the venison I took back.

I own several double rifles, and have owned many more over the past 49 yrs since I bought my first one, in 1958!

A really well fitted double rifle, and combination guns are the only firearms that were never designed for anything but hunting! All others have some history in war weapons, at least in their ancestors which the first of their kind were made for fighting other humans.As someone noted, drillings are fine hunting guns, but IMO, only if they have twinn double rifle barrels, with a shot barrel on the bottom, in which case they are not much cheaper than a fine double rifle, but far more usefull than a regular drilling, for my purposes!

I hunt almost exclusively with double rifles, and have taken game on four contents, and many countries, from Jackrabbits in TEXAS, to Cape Buffalo in three countries in Africa, and nothing works better! A perfect S/S double rifle for all around hunting in Europe is a little S/S Chapuis, or Merkel chambered for 9.3X74R, with a quick detach scope mounting. They shoot flat enough for long shots, and have enough power to take what ever comes down the trail. Even in Africa, with proper bullets, it is BIG 5 capable, and is leagal for such in several place! I have seven double rifles today, and all are used hunting even here in the USA, for everything. They are a Haffner 577, a Merkel 470NE, a Westley Richards 500/450#1 Express, a Merkel 9.3X74R, a Grand European 9.3X74R, a Berrela 8X57JR, and a Muzzle loading double 58 cal by Pedersoli! All have taken game in my hands, and some have taken lots of game in the hands of previous owner's hands as well!

The double rifle is a hunting rifle that is topped by nothing I know of for reliability, and are a joy to own, and hunt with! I must warn you, however, if you buy one, you will be hooked on the most addictive rifle type in the world!

I have 2 U/O doubles, Beretta SOEEL .375 H&H and a 9.3x74R with .30-06 barrels as well as 20ga barrels.

I would reccomend you get the Christies catalogue, they have some very nice guns at very good prices there form time to time but you could easily end up with something kinda obsolete or unusual.

I recall the subscription to the cataloge was about £500,000 lire before the euro, then it became 600 euro last time I got it, so now I've declined to have them renew it....

I have one at the moment. Seems like that is all I can afford at one time. I have a William Douglass 470 a fine gun that balances very well. I'm looking into a blaser 500-416 with a set of 9.3x74r barrels. I know it is new tech., but I think that the S2 action is the strongest on the market, and they seem to be accurate. You can shoot any bullet in them and a 2 barrel set will cost less than my Douglass.

Are your Berettas on the standard 20bore action? I have a 20b beretta and 20b browning and didn't know if the rifle barrels could be bought for those guns?

Buying a drilling to get over the lust for a double rifle is like going to Africa to get it out of your system.
