Took my Chapuis and the 30mm rings down to the gun store today and tried out some scopes. The 56mm scopes were just too big. I had the dealer order me the Ziess 2.5-10x50 with an illuminated reticle. I looked at a scope with the Varipoint reticle and I felt the dot floating in air might be too hard to pick up if the red dot was not turned on. I chose a duplex type reticle with a small red dot that is at the intersection of the crosshairs. When I get it mounted and test fired I will report back.

Tony, short of Kaps Zeiss is our choice for illuminated scopes. We sell the varia point in 1,1-4 as a driven boar scope. The 1,5x 6 x 42 with the 56 Illuminated scope is a real winner too.

Good choice! For a while, you seemed all hot on the Varipoint reticle, and I did not feel like raining on your parade. Your point is exactly what I feel, though: it is nice to have a lighted reticle, but sure as heck you'll be using it unlighted more than you'll use it lighted. So the first thing to do is to look for a reticle design that is proven, that has worked for years. Preferably one that gives you good low light performance as well. And finally, you see if you can add just a tad of shooting time to that setup, if the reticle is lit. Otherwise, you end up in a situation where all of a sudden your hunting relies on batteries... Huh??? Heard in the African bush: "I'm sorry, I can't shoot that animal, my batteries are low..."

I don't think you'll be disappointed with your choice!
