This years first bull moose!!
At the first day of the hunt, I downed a nice bull moose, weighing in at around 900 pounds, with a twelve peg rack. The moose presented itself on a clearcut in the forest around 140 yards away, running with a angled broadside slightly away from me... I immediately raised my 9,3x62 and aimed roughly a meter in front of where I wanted to hit the running moose. As the bullet struck him he went down as a sack of potatoes, trying to get up with his forelegs, bellowing and kicking. I had spined him and taken out his lungs and he finally stopped moving after a few minutes. The Norma Alaska was recovered just under the skin on the off side, with a separated leadcore. I guess this would be a good case for the bonded core bullets, but since moose generally are weakskinned animals, I think I will stick to the Alaska for increased woundchannels in softer parts of the moose. If anyone has just shot a moose please let us hear about it!!!

Grattis med lgen.

You said Alaska bullet performance wasn't that good. I experienced the same when I used them.
They do get a good wound channel, but the don't go all the way through in most cases. Do they..??!
I used RWS TUG for a couple of moose they do what the Alaska do but the back end stay whole (like nosler) and they tend to be kinder on the meat.
Of course..Me being a dane shouldn't try to tell you anything on what to use on moose, I know.
But I shoot a Tikka 512 9,3x74R myself and so far I've had the best results with TUG. Just thought I'd tell about it.
I'm trying either Woodleigh 320 grs or ditto 286 grs. this year. One of my swedish hunting buddies uses the 320 grs and has had good expieriences with it.

Friends,

Your opinions please. I will be visiting Seden in a few weeks for a Moose hunt. Options as regards rifle are a .375hh (blued) or 30'06 (stainless). Tend towards using Nosler partitions!

What would you take - I shoot either calibre accurately, having had both for some years. I tend toward the 30'06 if only because its a stainless/synthetic and my experience of Sweden has been WET! :0)

MIS - congratulations on the first bull of the season!

I have had problems with penetration with the Alaska, but if you do a lungshot its a very good bullet. Since most moose are shot through the lungs I considder it a very good bullet as long as the task doesnt involve capping off a large bull through the shoulders...
...I have shot the TUG on large moose too, It leaves a small woundchannel, the animals tend to run a little longer, but penetration is sufficient for spines and shoulders. However I was discouraged by the TUGs performance last year when I shot a small bull through the head twice before he went down. The first shot was a little bit in front of the brain, but if it had been an Alaska it wound have taken out the brain.
...I guess its a question of what you use it for and where you plan to shoot. Head and lungs = Alaska, shoulders and quartering shots = TUG...
...I guess the new 286gr Oryx will be a nice compromise between the two!
Good luck in future hunts!

Thanks!
I guess I would go with the stainless -06! The 30-06 is sufficient to whack any Swedish moose with authority. And as you say Sweden can be wet this time of year. Another thing to considder is the fact that you probably can borrow ammo from huntingpals as the -06 is quite common in Swedish huntingcamps, wich is not the case with the 375 H&H.

Nice moose MIS! I've got a couple of friends coming up from Nebraska in November to go chase Bullwinkle around for a week or so. Hopefully we'll find them a couple of your moose's Canadian cousins. Again, congratulations. - Dan
