ChasseurMouflon hunting
Hello,
I am going on a cull hunt for mouflon in Hawaii next month.
I've never been hunting mouflon before, though I've been reading up on the subject. Been practicing for long range shots (I've been told arround 200 yards or so), and doing exercise to get my a little more ready for mountain hunting (long flights of stairs with weighted backpack).
Any advice for a first time mouflon hunter?
Thanks!

jbderunzDear Chasseur,
The mouflon has a stunning sharp sight.
Remove everything shiny : your ring and your watch.
Usually I hunted with the game department for they don’t ask my gold teeth and fillings be removed.

Good hunting

BoghossianHi,
I have only shot 1 mouflon before, but they do have a reputation for being 'soft' and any chest hit usually results in a quick death. Mine was taken with a 7x57 and didn't move from the spot.
As Jean said, they can spot shiny objects OR movement at huge distances, and the females are the worst...
Hope the cull goes well, is it taking place on a private ranch? Are the mouflon in Hawaii purebreds or mixed with the feral sheep that are also found in Hawaii?
Cheers and good hunting!

ChasseurMerci et cheers for your replies!
The mouflons to my knowledge are pure breeds, probably with some interbreeding with some. The mouflon were introduced there in the 20th century for hunting. The state of Hawaii bought a private ranch to add to its land, and they are in process (because of a law suit by the Sierra Club) of eradicating all mouflon on public land on the island of Hawaii (Da Big Island to fellow kamaainas

). So this time the state decided to get hunters to do it rather than pay "professionals" to do it from a helicopter like they up on Mauna Kea...
I'm using the 06 since its my only "small bore center fire rifle", though a 7mm would probably be my first choice. I don't think my 9.3 double would work very well at 200 yards...

Old Elk Hunterit is kind of funny that most people don't know there is hunting in Hawaii. I enjoyed hunting pigs on Oahu 33 years ago. Couldn't afford to hunt on Hawaii then. Navy pay wasn't much. I've seen video of hunting turkeys on Hawaii. Looked like fun. Have a good time!
