9,3x66 Sako?

It has some very stiff competition from 9,3X62 and 9,3X64. I have been looking for some facts about this new round, but found nothing.

Has anyone any fact about this new cartridge

The Finnish magazines all tested it, it's supposed to outperform the .375 at longer distances. Sako makes it in four types with different bullets weighing 18,5 grams; Hammerhead, Powerhead (Barnes-X), Arrowhead (Nosler Ballistic Tip, 16,2g) and Ramhead (Barnes Solid). 9,3x64 isn't that popular here, so the real competition comes from the 9,3x62.

Would be nice to hear from someone who has actually used it. The gunmagazines' testers were pleased, of course.

9,3x66 is basically a 9,3x62 extended from the rear end to 66 mm. The neck dimensions are the same as x62, so it is possible to make a x66 of a x62 by simply extending the chamber. The bolt head needs modification at all. I believe RCBS already makes dies for x66.

Having read all the articles written about it here in Finland and also studied the test results, it appears that the x66 would have a great future, if there weren't so many x62s and x64s around. At the moment, it doesn't really make much difference which 9,3mm you choose, except that for x62 and x64 it's much easier to find ammunition and reloading equipment, and the 9,3mm bullets are mostly designed to work in slower velocities than x66 wants to give them.

What comes to .375 H&H and 9,3x66, well, the ballistics charts used for illustrating the x66's ability to outperform the .375 are definitely made in a certain purpose. Study them yourself and you'll understand what I mean.

Just my opinions.

I meant to say that the bolt head needs NO modification at all, even though the case is belted. I don't know any gunsmith having done x66s out of x62s here in Finland yet.

9,3x66 Sako case is not belted. Only firearms to shot x66s are Sakos M75 Synthetic Stainless and M75 Hunter.

IMHO that extra 4mm takes it outside the length that comfortably fits inside an unmodified Mauser mag box.

What would the effect be of firing a 9.3x62 in a CRF (ie holds the primer to the firing pin) 9.3x66?

The brass would make a hell of a base for wildcats!

This cartridge came about because Erkki Kauppi at Sako wanted a cartridge of his own design.
It was called the 9.3 x 66EK and I have a fully loaded cartridge that Erkki gave me in 1985 with that headstamp.
Erkki runs the ammo plant for Sako.
Sako wanted another cartridge to call their own besides the 7 x 33 and this was the one decided on.

COAL of x66's is about 85 mm (3.346") and it fits Sako's size IV actions. Action size is the same as with calibers .30-06 and 9,3x62 etc.

It seems like a new caliber that is higly interesting but totally needless except for Erkki Kauppi...

So to line the nitro loaded 9,3.s up we have:
9,3x57, 9,3x62, 9,3x63, 9,3x64, 9,3x66 , 9,3x70 and of course the 9,3x74R.

The 9,3x57 was probably first, introduced maybe before 1900, a good Moose, brown bear, wild boar caliber... [Razz]

The 9,3x62 Will also do on the big five... [Smile]

The 9,3x63 Introduced sometime between 1902 - 1904, almost as powerful as the .375 H&H or the 9,3x64 [Big Grin]

The 9,3x64 Very potent but no better than the 20 years older 9,3x63...

The 9,3x66 Well nice attempt... [Confused]

The 9,3x70 THE power house, better than .375 Weatherby... [Cool]

The 9,3x74R As the 9,3x62 -does everything the other 9,3 does (except 9,3x57) but with lesser recoil. [Wink]

The choise is up to you!

I own a 9,3x62 Husqvarna 1600 Special, a Miller & Val. Greiss 9,3x63 and a Robert Hï¿½bner drilling 9,3x74R 16/16 and have for the moment no need for the 9,3x66... BUT a 9,3x70 would be very nice!

Just to throw something else into your 9.3 lineup, I have a commercial 96 Husqvarna action in what seems to be 9.3 X 60. I bought it thinking it was a 62 but the chamber definately isn't that. Tried the 57 rounds and they slop around in the chamber. I make my own brass from necked up and shortened -06 cases, and use 57 load data which works quite well. Wish I could find a few commercial rounds for it though. - Dan

9,3x60 -welcome to the 9,3 family! We will probably very soon see the 9,3x62,5 introduced...

I forgot one -the rimmed version of the 9,3x64 -which is the 9,3x65 Brennecke.

Your rifle must have been rechambered of another than Husqvarna!
Husqvarna made very good rifles but was totally uniterested in market their own caliber...

I noticed that there is a a 9mmx66 and a 7x66mm, both the old Super Express Vom Hofe rounds.

I believe it has been mentioned that the 9.3x66mm is a lengthened '06 case.

I wonder if the 9.3x66 isn't in the same family of cartridges as the Vom Hofe rounds? I do not have my reference material with me to see at the moment.

You guys forgot the notorious 9,3x53R Finnish (actually a 7,62x53R expanded to 9,3 mm). 16,5 g bullet, 710 m/s, about 4100 J of energy. Has killed thousands of moose in Finland. Sako still loads this round.
