BERLIN: Wild boars are breeding at a huge rate in Germany and wreaking greater havoc than in any other European country by destroying crops, killing
pets and even attacking people, according to a new study.
Findings by the Hanover-based Institute of Wildlife Research show that Germany's boar population rose by 320 percent last year because of better access to food and bigger litters of young.
"It's impossible for their habitat to adapt to a surge of this degree," the institute's Gunter Sodeikat said.
Increasingly encroaching on suburban areas, boars have been reported attacking people, killing pets, and digging up corpses in cemeteries. Graveyards and gardens are being ravaged daily, police say.
The surge has also caused mounting destruction of crops and raised the risk of swine fever spreading, Sodeikat said.
According to the institute, the boar boom is exceptional in Germany, though it is not yet clear why.
"German litters have six to eight piglets on average, other countries usually only about four or five," the study said.

BurkhardThe large number of wild boars become more and more a problem.
In traffic, cars kill many thounsands per year, and in the streets of the cities you can not shoot, its illegal.
In some regions, they pay you the ammo for the hunt.
Good times for wild boar hunters.
My 9,3x62 loves it.

Happiness is a warm 9.3x62 barrel.....
Thankfully brought a good stash of 286 gr. Hornady 9.3 bullets back from my last trip to the States!
We located a "Rotte" of @ 65 Wild Boar the other day - tucked away on a wooded "Island" at the junction of two Autobahns and a major Highway. We had a difficult enough time ourselves crossing the road without being run over - how the Boar manage is "an amazement". By the look of the undergrowth they've been in there for quite a while.
We'd stumbled across a well used trail indicating they were x-ing into the area. When we entered the wood they did the dash in every direction. The only thing we saw were disappearing Wild Boar and heard the screech of brakes and honking automobile horns.
No way you're gonna be able to shoot in a location such as this.

glad to say, that we reduced the population by 9 pigs last week!!
on a sad note we were told that the previous week a young hunter was badly injured in a corn[maize field ]by a boar and an older hunter who went in with his dog was killed by the same boar cutting the femoral artery in his leg ,the other hunters apparently had trouble locating him in the corn

puntgunnerNot wishing to hijack this thread, but I have heard that th number of boar in Spain has also exploded.
A chat with a Repat. down the local, indicated that they had a real problem with boar in some areas.
Is this due to the numbers , or the fact that the locals don't( I can't believe that ) or can't hunt them as they used to.
Can anyone with first hand knowledge cast a light?
