londonhunterWhat do you say to your wife
Hi Guys
Just wondering
What do you guys say to your wife , spouse, partner if you go out and bought another firearms on impulse ?
I am running out of excuses
(Correction I have run out of impulses)
There is a member at my club who is in his late sixties.
He is a below average shot but fortunately his wife does not shoot nor attends.
So everytime he buys a gun he tells her that he won it in a club competition !
He has been doing it for 30 years and have fill many rooms with guns that way
Unfortnately this trick does not work with my other half since she checks all my competition results weekly !
HELP ...................
BTW have you guys heard of the
300 AAC Blackout ?
Could not resist it and ordered one for fun yesterday
This will be very popular after the Shot Show in a week's time.
Please don't ask me what do I need it for
To be honest I don't but
this subsonic thing really tickles my fancy ...
I need therapy

peterdki usually try to get her something as well to divert the attention from what i bought, that way we have a unspoken mutual agreement that she wont ask the price and i wont tell.
not so long ago i brought flowers home on a whim, and she asked me at once if she could see my new gun, i just told her that i did not get a new gun but just wanted to make her happy...
it took her about 15 minutes to actually belive that there were no new guns coming in from the car.

hopefully she will remember this, when i get something new and forget to bring her anything
best

So it would go along the lines of Darling you know how well you have been getting on with xxxx rifle well why dont you use it all the time.
Then a couple of weeks later buy myself a replacement.

GerryMy wife knows nothing at all about shooting - but once I walked to the back door w/a rifle, intending to put it in the car - she takes a casual glance & remarks "That's a nice one; never saw it before."
Well, of course she couldn't have ever seen that particular rifle prior BECAUSE it was brand spanking new .....
Rule #1 - Always put them in the slip directly after taking them out of the Safe!

Why tell? I recently got caught when she didnt recognise my new to me Python, when I cleaned it in the kitchen. I told her the truth, that it was an old gun and I got i cheap. I didnt tell her what I consider cheap for a mint Python.

That is what is going through my head, what actually comes out of my mouth is somewhat different.
I normally rely on the "I traded off that old rifle, only had to add a couple of hundred (not a couple of grand) for the new one...".
If my wife knew the cost of Swarovski gear I would be de-balled.

londonhunterOK Lads
Problem solved
What I have actually done is to show her this thread
and said
Would I have told you all these lies just to keep this rifle ?
We both had a good laugh and its peace on earth now in our household
I also said I selected that caliber since it has very low recoil and noise signature for her and the children
Lucky it is not the magnum
The downside is that now she knows I post on this forum regualry I have to be even more careful as to what I say in the future....
Ghubert can we swop names ?

And in addition to getting the green light for one of these:
You might be in line for a bit more of this:
The only alternative is to find a better half who buys guns herself, then you get to powerplay on gun purchases.

Lincs StalkerReminds me of the 3 rules of firearm safety, in these days then the belt and braces approach won’t do.
1/ Never point a firearm at anyone.
2/ Always check it is unloaded.
3/ Never tell the wife how much it costs.

GhubertSo we've got a load tips on lying to the wife, hoodwinking the wife, misleading the wife and even one case of taliban-ing the wife into okaying gun purchases.
Even considered changing the wife?
My wonderful, caring girlfriend bought me a stainless Sako varminter in 308 for Christmas(that was the gist of what she must have been saying I'm sure) and even wants me to go and shoot deer with it!

Bill Poole25 year ago we decided that a tiny tiny percentage of my paycheck would be direct deposited into a special bank account, my "hobby money". Now, every time I talk about wanting a new gun her response is "do you have enough money in your account?"
good new, I can buy anything I want and can afford (if its legal and available). Bad news, I have to carefully scrimp and save or even sell something to buy things I want.

Fallow BuckI think the best one so far is that I had to buy several guns last year before the end of the tax year as a write off...(along with powder, dies, bullets etc...)

Idaho SharpshooterMy Grandfather was a very wise man. He imparted much wisdom to us over the years.
One thing has stuck with me. "Marry a woman who makes about 10% a year more than you do. You will never hear her say 'our' money." I did that, the second time. The first it was a pretty face and a huge set of boobs that did me in. A year and two weeks, cost me a Ford Cobra to get out.
The second one, better looking, a college degree, and a driving desire to be independent financially. Never heard the word "WE" and "Money" mentioned in the same paragraph until she said "let's build a new house."
Her only mandate, "don't be borrowing money to buy guns, unless you can pay it back within 90 days." I can live with that.

Ghubert, after you turn that girlfriend into a wife, if you can then come back to us with a smiling face we'll buy it

The key usually is if it can be afforded without disrupting the household, OR if you're all the time carrying them in and out, that way if the question arises about where that came from, you can always act surprised and say, what this? I've had this one for years, just don't shoot it much

GerryActually, my wife is a Gun Snob & doesn't know it ..... black plastic and a matte finish doesn't even register on her Richter Scale .....
..... however; add some engraving, AAA+ grade wood and a mirror-like blued finish and you've got her attention.
I was scrolling through Cabelas Gun Room on the Internet as Mrs. Gerry strolls by ......
..... IIRC just happened to be looking at an outlandishly engraved, 5 Gold inlayed w/AAA+ grade wood Parker shotgun going for $47,000.00. "Oh, that's nice." Mamma says. I point at the price and wrinkle my nose. Her response, "Well, you could sell them all and have one really nice one!".
WTF am I gonna do with one 28 gauge shotgun and three Gun Safes that hold; well let's say right @ about 50 rifles, shotguns, pistols & revolvers?

BwanaColeI don't stand a chance because my missus is a psychologist, "so, why do you feel you neeeeeed a new gun???"

That being said, she makes as much dosh as I do and compared to my other hobby (desert racing a Hummer H1 in north Africa) guns are CHEAP!!!! As long as what I do does not cost the house anything, its all good. Doesn't hurt that I regularly do the romantic thing for her (not a chore, she's a five foot 12 inch knockout!) I'm just lucky to have her!

Mike_DettorreI am not a huge collector of firearms...
I usually just have 3-5 handguns, 3-5 rifles, and 3-5 shotguns.
Same goes for women, 3-5 at a time

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

p dog shooterI say honey look at my new gun.
Years ago I started a gun fund what I buy out of that no problem she knows what it is for.
She knows I am not going to use more money then we can afford nor pay to much for them.
Any way the kids would give her a hard tme if she gave me a hard time about buying guns.
We well have been married 30 years this Jan 31st I should go buy a gun just because of it.
Most likely not I don't have any good deals lined up. But if the right free marget 45 acp came along I would by it.
