infared game finders
Hullo
Can anyone tell me of their experience with infared game detectors. Have recieved a GF-PRO 2000 as a gift, and curious as to whether anyone else has one or similar and how good they are? From the owners manual it seems pretty nifty with abilities to read heat from 30 yds in heavy cover to 700yds in open terrain etc.

I've had one for a year or so and have yet to find an animal with it. Dead animal that is.

As far as I've heard from friends, it's quite a tricky device to use efficiently.

First of all, it's obviously very sensitive to the natural sources of heat, like rocks that have caught sun in the daytime. It also appears that the degree of sensitivity needs a lot of tuning pretty much all the time during the use, depending of course on the scenery.

I've also been told that the best use for it is in around +5C temperature while tracking a wounded animal (like tjder) and in winter when trying to find deer-size animals from the woods.

as I said, these are experiences of my friends, haven't tried the thing myself.

One of our hunting magazines tested a couple of these in the latest issue. They recommended a tracking dog [Big Grin]

A bloodhound he should be. Never use a retriever for, if he happens to be like my late Lab, he'll keep on bringing back the damn gadget every time you throw it away and you'll never get rid of it [Big Grin]
