Shipping Stag head from Scotland to US?
Shipping Stag head from Scotland to US?

A few years ago a Gamekeeper friend of mine arranged a few days stalking in Scotland for me and I was able to shoot three nice stags. Well when we were over in Scotland this summer my wife convinced my gamekeeper friend to get her a stag head to add to the collection. He is a good friend and having a stag he shot would be special to my wife and I.

So here is the question. How do I ship a stag head (dried skull and antlers) from Scotland to the US? Are there taxidermists in the UK that know how to arrange this? I am not sure where to start. Any help you guys could provide would be greatly appriciated.

I had mine sent from a taxidermist. They came FedEx. $850 for two heads. Can give more details if you need.

A taxidermist should be able to help you with this. There are loads throughout the uk that should be able to get it sorted, are you having it mounted or will you do that at home? The taxidermist I use is Gary Tatterton. I find his work is always fantastic if you google him you'll get his contact details otherwise pm me and I'll give you his email address.

Best is talk to your nearest USF&W agent for instructions.
You will need to fill out a 3-177 form and export permit from the originating country.
do this with the USF&W agent before the trophy is shipped and that will speed things up.
The shipment will have to go to a port of entry for clearance so find out where your nearest POE is, might be LA.

You probably need the skull boiled and bleached, but maybe that was what you meant with "dried"?

A few years back I had a MT friend hunt with me in Austria. Later I shipped the boiled and bleached chamois skull to my friend. It was addressed to him personally (not to a taxidermist) and was sent directly from me (not a taxidermist either). I included a note to the US Customs regarding the origin of the skull. I assume the shipment was inspected (delay in transit), but in the end it arrived safe and sound.

Maybe contact US Customs (or whatever Federal Agency is responsible - USFW?) and clear up what you can receive and in what form.

Speak to Colin Dunton

IMHO he is one of the Best Taxidermists in the UK

he does a lot of work for overseas including the US

The last time I was there amongst other intersting stuff in his workshop was a Full mount Red Stag, a huge Alaskan Moose and a scene of two mountain lions with their kill of a black tailed buck.

Hi,

do not know about US import restrictions, but I do send my stag's skulls by Royal Mail to Germany.

Just put them into a carton box and post it. Costs about 40 GBP, but then this is inside the EU so might not be as easy to the US.

best luck
