Ok boring Sunday thread.

If you were shooting muntjac from a high-seat in say two weeks time which of the two following firearms would you take?

In the Red corner:

Finland's finest, wears big glasses and is fat bottomed to the point that Brazillians call "gatosa"; she is of course Cynthia's Sako varmint in 308 with a 4.5-30x56 target scope.


In the Blue corner:

Finland's second best, a hunter through and through and hasn't earned the nickname "Trusty Rusty" for no reason. Recently she's had a nose job which makes her look like the bastard love-child of Barry Manilow and Cher but now not as noisy as she was famous for; she is my baby, the Tikka hunter with a 7x50IR hunting scope.

Shots can range from 30 feet to 400 yards depending on where one is put. My average over 5 beasts has been 75 yards in the woods and 200 yards on the fields.

Which would you take?

I like a 308 target type rifle. How fine are the cross hairs on its scope? Are you sure you'll be able to see them at 1st light / last light if you're in the middle of the woods?
That being said, what's Trusty Rusty done to deserve not to be picked this time as well?

The crosshairs are pretty fine but the scope itself, a Bushnell Elite 6500 is actually not half-bad at last light if one is sensible with the magnification. About on par with my old Meopta I would say.

Rusty has started behaving a little oddly lately, shifted her zero 6 inches left for a one session and then six inches back to the right again for the next, some instances of odd grouping, etc. I looked in her with a borescope after a thorough clean and it looks like she might need a new barrel at some point this year.

She'll be fine I'm sure but like Brian says if we're going to get as wet this year as we did last then the Stainless steel Sako may just get the nod.

6 inches to the left and similar to the right will still get you something

You need to get a bit closer

Bring both, gives you an option which to choose depending on the weather, light, seat, mood etc.

I seem to remember a certain gentleman turned up one morning in a wood in Croatia with a 9.3x62 bolt gun in one hand and a 416 Rigby double in the other.

He seemed to be having a crisis of confidence whether or not he was using enough gun to shoot a little porker....

This will do fine out to at least 600 - bring it.

Of all the rifles I have in my cupboard, I think I would use my Remington 700 Bdl in calibre .222 with the 17" barrel.
That way, nobody in the next field would hear me shooting and if I had a particularly bad day with a few misses I would not have to declare them as such !!!!!
Oh by the way, it has a Schmidt and Bender 6 x 42 scope mounted on it so perfectly adequate out to 250 yards.

Both I think, I'll be playing with loads at Bisley tomorrow.

Do you think the estate will be upset if I load up some 125 grainers?

I'm going to try Dennie's theory of zeroing at 300 yards and holding under for shorter distances with the 308 and the normal 1.5" PBR for the 06.

To be honest I'm sick of dicking around with the rifles and just want to get out and shoot some deer!

as for zeroing at 300 you are sking for trouble. dennie shoots wildebeeste and eland not munties. given we rarely get a shot over 100m in those woods zero at 150 and just get on with shooting any deer you see.
