I have an older, beautiful light sporter in this caliber, and every once in a while I am getting earful from my friends (they prefer 7x64 and 30-06) about how old fashion I am and should get something better… However, I always felt that 8x57 should be the top notch with good quality bullets in handloads. Don’t reload 8x57 yet, just revolver calibers. In process of gathering reloading data, I found excellent load on this website; http://www.vihtavuori.fi/ , go to “Reloadingâ€, “I agree†and select on the left link “Download reloading guides “ and download “Vihtavuori Reloading Guide 1/2004â€.

Go to page 32; 200 grains Nosler Partition at 2695 fps. Can’t ask for better load.

Totally agree! The old warhorse is just too good to be ignored. It is an amazingly effective cartridge, that will do pretty much anything a .30-06 will do. On top of that, due to its larger bullet diameter, it is preferable for pigs and like animals.

Pity some countries have stupid gun laws precluding the use of such wonderful cartridges!

The 8x57JS is a winner. I use the Norma 196 Factory load. The Nosler data is good too. Makes the old cartridge shine.

Another great caliber that is very underrated in the U.S. I have always liked the Nosler 200 grain Partition.

I traded my 8x57 JS, but would certainly get another.

I have a bag of Norma and RWS brass 150+ pieces, together with 75x 200grain Barnes X. And a set of RCBS FL dies.

I have an original( but "tuned") Husquarna 640 in 8x57 and I love it. Moderate recoil, exellent accuracy and fantastic effect on game. I load it with 180 grs Barnes X, and it has never failed me! The 200 grs Partition made to much of a mess for my liking. I would like to try the 220 Woodleigh, thou.

When you mentioned 180 grains Barnes X, are you talking about 180 grains TSX BT? Would you, please, specify powder, charge and velocity? What is the barrel length? My primary use is for the wild boars, but would like to know would this bullet open reliably on a deer? Thanks.

I have only used the old XFB. Norma brass, Fed 210 primers, Vith. N-140 - 50 grs, Vo 820 m/s.
Barrel length is 60 cm in my old Husquarna 640.
The chamber has rather generous dimentions, so it might be over max in a thight chamber.

I shot my first deer with a 8x57IS mauser I have, and has been facinated with the caliber ever since!

The rifle posted here is an original Oberndorf Mauser made in 1914!.
It`s an early first Model M !

Sure thing, I have shot roe deer calfs with it and they works like a dream!

Tha only animal I would feel undergunned against with this gun would be, Buffalo, Rhino, Hippo and Elephant.

Does any one else own an 8x57IS on a Husky 96 action? If so, what loads are you using?

I have one I built on a 98 action and love it. But I just acquired a Husky and it is a sweet rifle.

I assume that you are talking abouth a Husquarna mod.46.
Theese have very, very good steel in them, and I see no reason to load them weakeer than the 98's.

I'm using the 8x57 IS rimmed sister (8x57 IRS)in my Merkel 141E doublegun.
I have used this gun for some time now and the results have been very convincing. I have shot some roe, a boar and a moose with it so far, no animal have traveled more then 50 m yet.
I have been using the Oryx 196 grain bullets loaded to 2400 fps and that have turned out to be enough.

Anybody has experience with Barnes 180 gr TSX BT bullets http://www.barnesbullets.com/prodtsx.php in 8x57JS? Any recommendation regarding powder and load, what is the accuracy, would it open reliably on lighter game like small deer on 200-300 meters? Thanks.
