Can any of you guys tell me what hunting/shooting/fishing opportunities are available in France & Portugal and at what sort of cost please?

Any and all information would be thankfully received as I absolutely bugger all about it.

Reminding myself of the old questions 'what do you call someone who speaks two languages? ' = Bilingual

grandveneur is absolutely correct... these guys don't speak english @ all.

However, you might be able to swing one of the guides in the alps or pyrennes who speaks some english... depends. call and ask.

I'm thinking about a longish visit at least and am really more interested in general info about what sort of thing is available in what areas and rough costs rather than trying to book a specific hunting/shooting/fishing trip at the moment so any info at all would help. (including seasons etc.

I've tried emailing various hunting organisations over there but don't get any replies.....

A name undoubtedly well-known to you, Jean-Pierre Bernon of Club Faune, He does European hunts in addition to his African hunts. Great red stags in France (Spain as well if you are transiting to get to Portugal). Hunted red stag on with hounds and horses with him in 17th century tradition -- thrilling. No firearms, of course. But you can do modern hunts as well.

I had a great hunt for driven boar in Normandy, That hunt was arranged by Paul Roberts and I don't know if he is still doing these hunts but I got the impression that there were many hunters in the area offering hunts like the one I was on.

I can help with almost any hunt you would like to do in France : stag (stalking or with a pack of hounds), wild boar (driven or also with hounds), roe deer (same), chamois, mouflon,fallow, hare, rabbit, woodcock, snipe, ducks, pheasant, partridge, (all either driven or walking-up), etc...
Any area : Sologne, Brenne, Touraine, Normandy, Provence, Burgundy, Alps, Pyrenees...Just advise what period you are looking for and your favourite hunts... dannaud@dannaudsafaris.com

We used to get some interesting hunt reports on here from Portugal. It was predominantly hares and partridges and all the hunting was controlled by the clubs. The members did all the conservation work and then split the shooting between them as half walked up and half driven.

I don't remember what was out there for big game shooting.

More generally, I think I'm most interested in hearing general info about (mostly) wingshooting & fishing possibilities etc & FWIW, I've recently found out some areas have very good duck shooting which sounds good to me.

Hi Steve, You will always be welcome to come and shoot ducks in our "Sologne des Etangs" area 200km south of Paris,plenty of ponds with some superb flights : mallard, teal, wigeon,shoveller, pochard, snipe, and the odd wild-boar in the reeds (September 1st to mid-Feb.) and I shall definitely invite you on a stag hunt also with our pack of 80+ hounds. When will you be coming ? Am now going to Siberia then Scotland then Kazakhstan. No Zim nor S.A in very near future, only Niassa/Mozambique in November but I hope to see you in France before then !

Sounds good to me buddy..... We're not 100% sure it's going to happen yet but we are about 95% sure. Assuming it happens, we'll be in Europe (probably France and Portugal) from about late August/early September onwards..... and we'll be probably be doing a fair bit of travelling around.

Hunting in Scotland till Sept.5 then Kazakhstan till Sept 20, end of September would be perfect time / also matching well with stag roaring and the very beginning of our season with hounds.

In answer to your original question, I noticed you asked about the fishing also. A good friend of mine used to run a charter boat out of Portugal. The name of the port escapes me.

They get excellent runs of Tuna, mainly albacore although the bluefin are featuring more and more. the main event are the marlin though. They get a serious run of white marlin and I believe Blue and black also make appearances dependent on the season.

The fishing in France can also be very good in the snow melt rivers during the summer. I have never fished there but I believe that the fly fishing can be very good indeed. there are rivers that get runs of salmon and seatrout. On the coarse fishing side there is a huge industry revolving around the giant carp and catfish they have in their still waters.

Thanks buddy..... I knew about the carp and catfish fishing because my Brother is heavily into it but had no idea about the other fishing and that certainly sounds like something to look forward to very much!

You can find some very good hunting and Fishing here in Portugal.

The Hunting is mainly Red Partridge, driven or walked (with a stopping dog) some hare and rabbits.
You can also have some very nice pigeon shooting.
For the big game you can hunt wild boars and red stag driven (montaria) or by stalking.

This is one of the well known hunting organisations, they run some of the best hunting areas in Portugal.

They can organise different kind of programs for you, you should contact them.

As for the fishing you can charter big gmae fishing trips out of Vilamoura (Algarve), for tuna, marlin, shraks, etc; you can also have some very nice carp, barbel, trout, fishing but I don´t think you can book an arganised trip for this. I can however point you some good fishing areas.

I've been to Portugal twice and it is great country with good potential to have good hunting grounds but...
On the open grounds big game is overshot by club members. Pouching is too strong in areas where I went even though my guides told me that it's the case in whole Portugal.
Good hunts you can find in enclosed grounds and monterias there are good and expensive ,similar to Spain but the fence is bothering me so at the end I didn't want to shoot anything.
I left a few bags of corn and maze for animals.
The hospitality was great.
