1894mk2Fallow Calls
One of the things I wasted my hard earned cash on was an electronic call
http://www.bushwear.co.uk/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=349On receipt I couldn't believe that a deer would fall for the recording which being from a small speaker sounds rather tinny. I kept the packaging and tried it in the southwest, not really a fair test as I don't think the reds were on my land.
This morning I tried it on fallow. No activity in view (about 100yards) so just before I left I gave it a go. Within 2 minutes a large buck came running. I managed to bark to stop him but he was hell bent on a big fight with whoever was making that noise! I suspect that the reproduction makes it sound as if the calling buck is further away.
Anyways not conclusive proof but pretty impressive so far.

Pete EAlso illegal if you use it to shoot the buck???
Puntgunner is pretty good at calling the bucks using his voice, but as someone who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, I would really benifit from one of thsse callers, if they were legal???

Pete

Hey! I did that in this morning - in reverse!!

Got out of the car to hear major groaning going on a few hundred yards away. Trotted in the direction of the sounds...and trotted..and trotted ........ all the way to the boundary of my grounds!!
Then I realised it was safely holed up in a patch of wood a further five hundred metres across the valley.
The wretched thing was STILL calling half an hour later - after I had followed the call for the best part of eight hundred metres!
Yep - those deer calls really work!!

You'll note I said nothing about shooting it.
It really does seem to work as I called another buck in a different patch 8 hours later.

Pete EAnd I hope you'll note I did say "if"...

Actually, I mentioned that you because I am not 100% certain of the law myself...The advert in Bushwear for instance mentions its illegal to use an electronic call for shooting birds, but no mention of deer???

Pete

trans-pondPersonally I'm a little disappointed to hear 1894 mk2 reverting to "micro chipped toys" to get a buck or indeed a stag in his sights.
It is only going to "dupe" the local dominant male ...the beast that ought to be spared until after he has spread his seed.
Bring back the 1894 original I say!!

I take the point but there are 2 mitigating circumstances.
1. This is culling not trophy hunting. I need to kill deer that are causing excessive damage and the damage at present is caused by thrashing stags and bucks.
2. In my experience it (and other calling methdologies) doesn't just bring in the stand buck but also prickets, lesser bucks and does.
Don't really see the difference twixt this and a butalo for roe in the rut.

I don't know....
Some of us have even started considering clayman's and mortars in an attempt to get even with the Fallow....
I don't see a bit of digital gadgetry in too bad a light as long as no laws are being infringed.
