David WaltherCan I use my .416 in scotland?
Hi!
I have a .416 Rem and wonder if I can use it for hunting deer in Scotland/UK?
I just sold my 308 (Sako L597) just because I disliked more and more. It had major jamming problems that gunsmith Fossdal fixed. It ended up much better but still it was not as it should be. I will by time buy (when my spouse says ok) buy a small bore gun in either caliber .30 or .243. Until then my .416 is my hunting buddy on any game.

David WaltherI have heard so much about all kinds off silly gun laws in UK. One guy told me some years ago that any gun bigger then .270 was banned for legal hunting on the island. (He was welsh). So what is the rules over there regarding caliber and is there any restrictions?

john.d.mThe gun laws here are a bit "different", we have to have a use for each rifle we want, and somewhere to use it,i.e landowners permission.
I am reasonably sure, that as a visitor, you just get letter from you host, and you can get a visitors permit and you can hunt with him with your rifle.
Some police forces to put a max calibre restriction on us, but I`m lucky, I have a 458 on open license(I can use it anywhere I have permission) for use on deer and wild boar.
Your host, should be able to sort it all out for you before you arrive.

MarkHNormally 375 H+H is the max calibre size in the UK for red deer hunting.

griffDavid,
On the Isle Arran Stalking scheme which is run by BASC in conjunction with the Forestry Commision there is no caliber restriction. The commision do not to have restrictions on caliber.
As a visitor you will find it easier to get approval than a resident..

griff
If this is for hill stalking, there is a good chance that your shots will be taken prone. I can think of calibers a lot better suited to open ground - and in particular to prone shooting

- than a .416. Still, if a .416 is what you have...
