Sika Deer in the Czech Republic
Leaving in a week and have a question about Sika Deer. I read where there are a lot, are they similiar to Fallow Deer and free ranging?

Where abouts would they be? I am going around Pilson.

Hey Mickey,

unfortunately i dont know where in the CZ there are free population of Sika, but as far as i know there is a wild population arround Kalovy Vary (Karlsbad) and guess thats not the only place where they could be hunted in free wilderness.

Of course you will find them too in fenced areas, because "fenced game population of any kind of deer" is very popular for the CZ.

Regarding your question if Sika are the same as Fallows i have to tell you that they nearly same by size, but look a bit different. From the body and the look thy are nearly the same, but they do have another trophie. More like the ones you know from red stags. The max. number of points is usaly 8. In some cases maybe more, but thats not common.

The trophie quality (from ehat i have heared and seen) could be compared to the irish sika population. Guess you wont see there realy good trophies, just average.

Here are some pics i found for you.

Sika (Sika Nippon) but there are a lot of "underspecies" -guess 13 or more- like Dybowski,....

Fallow stag:

Maybe go to the google page and look for some descriptions and read a little bit about behavior, etc.

Anyhow, hope i could help

Sika tend to be more of a forest deer, while fallow prefer mixed woodland and open pastures.
