Fallow Buck

Speaking of trophy's... what policy do you lot follow when selecting a beast? Is there such a thing as "Too good to shoot"?

Is it a case of, bigger is better, or do you prefer "cull" animals?

The guys I shoot with rarely shoot bucks on our land, (all Fallow), unless it is done by a paying customer.

Besides the prickets are easier to drag out of the field. [Wink]

Sat in the office, I'm sure there are a few deer sunning themselves right now on the shoot..... Wish I was there [Cool]

On big arable estates I shoot a third to one half of the bucks (depending on the neighbouring estates and damage)I shoot spikes/poor bucks from the 1st April and try to save the better bucks that I feel are as good as they're going to get until the rut. If they are rather too prominent from the road I try to wait until they're in summer coat but a skull mount doesn't have hair...

As an example in one 700 acre area I set myself a cull of 3-4 bucks which would be along the lines of one good buck (which I'll try to make an old one) one poor older buck and 2 young spikes.

In the purely woodland areas I generaly shoot what's in season if it crosses my path.

BTW here is a rough guide to aging roe bucks by head.

Old - coronets widely spaced, antlers swept back, forehead more furry.

Young - coronets close set, antlers upright, forehead smooth.
