GhubertHow's the boar hunting in Bulgaria?
What does the panel know about the driven boar hunting in Bulgaria?
On my sole foray I went to Germany and failed to get a shot on a boar, I can't help but feeling there is some unfinished business with pigs!

A general observation about driven pig hunting: pigs are very fickle, they will be here today and somewhere else (potentially miles away) tomorrow. So success on any driven hunting first depends on finding pigs. Secondly, it can be very hard to get pigs to move - anybody who has taken part in a drive as a beater will recognize this fact (in particular in the areas of DENSE cover - such as reed - the pigs like best). So a lot depends on having sufficient dogs of the "right" kind in the drive, as well as having a well organized "army" of beaters.
When all that comes together, it is still a gamble whether any pigs will present themselves at your stand. It is entirely possible to be in the woods for days with a war going on around you, yet you see absolutely nothing. That somewhat taxes the patience of even the most experienced hunter...
So to be successful in driven pig hunting you first of all need a healthy portion of luck. The more often you participate in a driven hunt, the better the chance that the all the stars will line up for you over the season. The more pigs in an area the better, but even then, the organization beaters and dogs used also have to be up to scratch.
So there are quite a few components contributing to success on driven pigs. Are these all available in Bulgaria?? They may be in some areas, they may not be in other areas. I don't think it is possible to recommend (or otherwise) a country as a whole, it really depends on the area you would like to go.

GhubertI know Mike, I was just after a feel of the place from folk that have been.

Amir
This is not in Bulgaria, but there are AR members who have used the services on a fairly regular basis. Northern Hungary (in general) has a lot of pigs. But all the caveats listed above still apply - in particular the one about a healthy potion of luck being required

Stop it! Stop it! You're going to put me off it again!

I hear you Mike, my first trip I didn't see so much as a Piglet, though I did see roe and fox which I passed up waiting for Porky, whereas a guy who'd never shot a big game animal before in his life shot a nice big boar.
Luck is very important.
Thanks for the link, very interesting.

Amir

SIKA98KIf anyone is interested we are putting a trip together with Nagyvad hunting for a driven boar hunt.3 nights,2 days driven boar.
20th of January 2012 is the proposed kickoff.
If we have 20 hunters the price will be 1050 euros all in.Flights to Budapest Ferighy are your own problem. But it is cheap to fly in January

Sika, you planning for the initial hunting day to be Friday 20-Jan-2012, i.e. arrival in Northern Hungary some time Thursday 19-Jan-2012, last hunting day Saturday 21-Jan-2012 and final departure (via Budapest -> home) on Sunday 22-Jan-2012???
