Claret_DabblerThe 260 is finally ready to hunt
Well, the 260 finally got blooded on Saturday evening, on it's fourth trip out. You spend a lot of money on a custom rifle, good scope, bipod, sticks, the perfect handload etc, and you end up shooting a Fallow buck at 30 yards off hand.....

It was very wet, and dark by the time I got him dragged out to the car. Took these photo's yesterday:
Number two son had to get into the frame again:

BoghossianNice buck too, was it taken off a rutting stand?

Claret_DabblerCheers lads. Gabe, it was not taken of a stand, I bumped him on a track walking out of a wood. Basically threw the rifle up and took him like a big rabbit. The 120gr sierra performed well, given impact velocity was around 2900fps, punched the near side shoulder, wrecked the heart and gave a nice tidy exit. No sign that the bullet shed it's core at that range.
The buck did not seem to have been rutting. His undercarriage was clean and dry. Interestingly he was blind in the left eye, and when I skinned him, his withers in particular had been badly bruised, and were half healed - bruises were turning green. I suspect he had a good kicking from a larger buck a week or ten days previously.
I think the rut is just about over here, the Bucks were roaring on Wednesday evening, a bit of roaring, but less on Friday, I heard none at all on Saturday afternoon, but it was very wet.
Kiri, have you managed to draw blood with your 260 yet?

GerryBrian,
Well-done....a hearty "Waidmannsheil"!
We were out for the first weekend of Drive Hunts for Piggies this weekend.
I'd taken some pics but we we were too busy drowning our sorrows to take photos; 11 Pigs & 4 Foxes for two days of staring at trees on our Pegs for the weekend and that with over 100 participants on Saturday.
Luck of the Draw - there'll be other weekends.

Cheers,

AndersCongratulations!

Fallow BuckAnders,
I'll do my best for you mate. I tdepends if Amir and trapper leave any on the ground by then!!

Brian,
I shot a charlie fox a week last saturday sat with Amir. It was the daftest fox in the world, given I get inot the seat and the phone rang, so I forgot to chamber a round. Then 20 mins before dark I started trying to call a Fallow and out pops the fox. I dry fired on him at which point he hears the click, freezes staring at the two slim jims in the tree 50m away. stayed looking at us all the time I was tring to get a round in the chamber and the crosshairs back on the fox!!
He got the good news in the end.
Stll haven't shot a proper critter with it though, so I suppose I'll have to go out saturday.

Trapper DaveDon't worry, Anders I'm sure there will still be plenty around in February for you.
At the rate Amir & I knock them over at, we aren't keeping up with population growth.
