I'm going there as a guest, Boar shooting.
Are there any local customs or traditions I should be aware of?

In answer to my own question.
Having returned, I can confidently assert that nothing can be done without vodka.
Someone in the party calls your name, raises a shot glass and downs it.
Then they refill the glass and pass it to you.
You look round and find the person on your left and repeat.
This carries on in the background until the bottle is empty.
In the foreground there is discussion on who is going to sit where for the boar, where the wind is coming from and what time to pack up.
After shooting is finished, everyone gathers round and helps to skin the beast and then drink more vodka and beer.
Don't forget to take your vodka if invited along

I would also add hunting.

Solvi, Nice pictures. I don't have any of the actual hunting but it was some of the most exciting hunting I have ever done.
I would go back tomorrow if I could!

Anders, these were the first Wild Boar I have ever seen.
The first group were three sows and eighteen little stripy piglets.
They scented us in the swirling wind after about ten minutes of watching.
About an hour later, another three sows and three youngsters with just their dark coats.
They too scented us and left.
Then, about 11PM just as I had unloaded the rifle and we started to move, a 70kg boar came out and I hurriedly loaded & shot him, badly wounding him.
There followed a wild chase through the dark forest with a little terrier following the blood trail and us the sound of his barking.
We thought the boar cornered as we closed in on the sound of barking but he escaped as the torch was shone on him and the dog lost the scent after a few hundred metres in some marsh.
We decided it was safer to leave him until the next day than to continue in the dark.
Got back around 0200 tired and wet with nothing to show but, oh what an adrenaline rush that chase was.
I was expecting and angry boar to come charging out of the dark at me at any moment. Either that or my eyes to be scratched out by the unseen branches
They went back and found the carcase the next morning.

Trapper Dave, where in Lith. did you hunt?

Near Joniskis up near the border.
Flew into Riga and hired a car.
The border is open

The Forest Service there run hunts too.
About £20- for an outing plus very reasonable trophy fees.

The whole trip, including car hire, flights, food, beer and vodka cost me around £350.

Very cheap compared with Turkey where I'm being asked 500 euros for a day's Boar hunting plus trophy fees etc.

Thank you. Relatives there have invited me to hunt with them and it's time to take them up on the offer.
