How about Scotland?
I may be headed to Scotland in May. I'd like to get some hunting in, and I'm not particularly particular about what it is. Never having been there, I'd appreciate some suggestions and advice.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Roebuck will be all that is available, a fine sporting quarry.

Hi,
If you go to www.modern-stalking.com forums and post an enquiry you will be flooded with Scottish stalking opportunities.

It should cost between £100 pounds a day to stalk roe bucks, with no trophy fees in many places. Others have a £50 success fee.
Cheers,
Gabriel

Gabriel,

That looked like a useful site. The forum link did not seem to work though, I got:

quote:
mySQL query error: DELETE FROM ibf_sessions WHERE ip_address='146.109.240.242'

mySQL error: Can't open file: 'ibf_sessions.MYI' (errno: 145)
mySQL error code:
Date: Thursday 23rd of February 2006 08:39:50 AM

Presumably, that is only temporary?? I.e. did it work at some previous time??

"Flooded with Scottish stalking opportunites" - That sounds good. Smiler

I did indeed "go there" and it is a good start, but I too found the forum unavailable.

Thanks,
Paul

I have been to scotland last year, and had a great time there, but.......there is a but...

Don`t your spend time/money hunting owned
by the scottish forest commision....why..?

Because most of the game are spooked big time.
The stalkers there are shooting year around, day and night which they are allowed to. The game doesn`t come out in the clearings before AFTER dark.
Any sound of a vehical, and all the game is way gone.
The scots are very fine people, but don`t spend your time on the commision lands.
Ask the people up there where your are going to hunt BEFORE going up there.

Jens, I agree entirely. I had a very poor time last June, stalking commercial forestry in the borders. Never again.

Book a proper Highland sporting estate where the land is managed for the sport not the damn timber. It may cost an extra few pounds per day but it will be worth it.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

i agree completely with Jens and Claret, i would"nt go near forestry commision land, although there"s still some stalking to be had on commercial forest in Dumfriess and Galloway or Ayreshire.(i used to lease land in both of these) if you want to shoot roe bucks, you can"t come at a better time than in May! i"ve found the traditional rut time to be dissapointing, but there"s a lot of territorial
activity in May.
good luck and good shooting

All Deer are out of season in March in Scotland.

You could freeze your nads off and fish for salmon....

Thanks! That's just the stuff I wouldn't have gotten off of an "official" Scottich Stalking site. Looks like it's roe and maybe some rough shooting.

Thanks again,
Paul

This is the stalking section for the biggest sporting agent in the UK.

The forums were working when I checked. There are plenty of professional stalkers on that website, so it is worth a look.

All the best, let us know how you get on.

Invader66,
roe does are in until the beginning of april, unfortunately they are carrying well formed young at that time of year, so not the best time. We have some excellent private stalking in Dumfries & Galloway with plenty of proffesional guides at reasonable prices. Send me a pm if you need more info.
