Anders
Is this the first time it has been documented in the UK?
The golden eagle takes quite a few lambs/sheep in Norway. They also prey on wild game such as reindeer, and they're known to attack full grown individuals, even though they probably prey mostly on calves.
We don't know much about the extent on which they prey on reindeer, but we're gonna start a new research project know to find out more. One of the methods is to use trail cams on their nests. Will be interesting for sure!

Arild IversenWell...my girlfriend owns a small island where we spend lots of time.
There are eagles to be seen everyday, single, in pairs or in flocks up to 15 birds at the most.
A farmer graze up to 30 sheep on the island and also 25 on a neighbouring island. These sheep are the old viking type of sheep that tend themself year around.
So far not one single lamb has been taking by eagles as far as we have observed over many years.
I don“t say it wont happen, but the coastal eagles seem to prefere fish and small game.

AkshooterI have watched eagles diving on new born lambs here in Alaska.
They don't have to fly off with them they only tug them off of the cliffs so that they fall to their death.
I don't know how the wild sheep in Alaska and our bald eagles compare to the issue here but I thought it worth mentioning.

Nordic2One of my hunting mates had his dog attacked by a eagle he threw it to the ground with his hands. They can take adult raindeers too.
I have seen a hawk attacking lambs.

Fallow Bucki was at a game fair a couple of years back where a falconry exhibitor was flying an eagle. He said that at one show the eagle had stooped accross the field neighbouring the show the show and not come back. When they went to get it, the bird had killed an big old dog fox!!
It was in in the spirit of making sure you keep your dogs on short leads and sitting between your legs while you watched the show...
