308winchesterPigeons in Germany
It's been a long time since my last post now, just too busy in university to get much hunting done, or to write about it. But a couple of weeks ago I got a invite from my roommate to come to her farm in Germany close to Dortmund to hunt some pigeons. I have never shot a pigeon before or hunted in Germany so, I jumped on the chance, skipped a few classes and took the plane over.
Got the paperwork done and the Gastjager permit and was ready to go hunting. Started at 2 in the afternoon, and it lasted till 6 in the evening. Had maybe 30 good chances, had a nice post under a big poppel. They said it was a bad day for pigeons, but as a Norwegian, being used to much less birds in a day, its was really fun.
Found the shooting a bit tricky, shooting straight up is not my strong point, and fast flying pigeon for a rusty shotgunner. And I found judging the distance on unfamiliarly game, even worse. So ended up with a bag of empty shells, and only 3 pigeons to show for it.
Got to borrow a nice browning for the hunt, so I can't blame the gun.. The other hunters had more luck, so I got a full backpack of pigeons to take back to Budapest
And the hospitality at my hosts were outstanding. Germans know their beer, snaps and food. Wildboar liver and heart makes a good dinner for a hungry student.
Here is a picture with my catch + some I just got for the pot

Sounds like you had fun.
I'm off to Dortmund (Kamen) again next year, are there many hunting opportunites around the area that are available to the public?
Waidmannsheil Johan, sounds like you enjoyed the hunt and had a good time with friends, always makes for a nice time, Dom.

I must admit, I have absolute no clue about what hunting is available to the public. The hunt I was on was about as private as they come.

Fallow BuckThanks for posting. I have a freind who went pigeon shooting once in Germany, and he said it was great because it was a big event for the hunting club.
I just processed a couple of dozen and had some for dinner last night.
Back out to shoot some more next week
