Handloads for 5.6x52R (22 Savage Hi Power)?
I'm looking for some handloading data on the 5.6x52R, a.k.a 22 Savage Hi Power. I've got data from a manual using IMR powder but was hoping to pick up some info using VihtaVuori, which I can get here easily and more cheaply than any USA manufactured powder. I already have a stock of Hornady 70gr bullets, so that's already set.

TIA,
Stu

Here is some data based on Norma powders: http://www.ladedaten.info/pulver/norma/56x52r.php3

You can find information for RWS powders on the same site as well.

Stu,
both the Vihtavuori and the RWS handbook give 5.6x52R loading data for the RWS 71 grain bullet.

Hello Martin,

I have the free VV booklet that you can pick-up when you buy their powder. It doesn't list a load for the 5.6x52R. Unfortunately I have neither the RWS manual nor the full VV manual.

Are you able to post min. and max. charges of VV N140 using a 70 or 71 gr bullet? That would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Stu

Stu, I have the RWS manual, so you are more than welcome to the data in that book. But it won't list anything but RWS powders (for which you can substitute Norma and Alliant RLxx, should you so wish).

Why don't you ask on the reloading forum? Surely somebody there might have some data for the .22 Savage Hi-Power (a.k.a. 5.6x52R) with VV powders??

I found this one on Reloaders's Nest. RWS TMS is a pretty standard spitzer soft point, I'm sure you could substitute other SP bullets for that.

thanks for that link. Haven't seen it before. I posted on the reloading forum last week and got a reference to STEVE'S PAGES . I'm just looking to cross-check the data with another source.

Cheers,

I also have that photocopy from the 1995 VV reloading flyer for you. They list a max load of 25.6grs N140 with an RWS 70 grs SP - that is pretty much the load from Reloader's Nest, isn't it??

Stu,

this is from the 2000 Vihtavuori handbook, 3rd ed.:

5.6x52R

Test barrel: 600 mm / 23 1/2"
Primer: Large Rifle
Cases: Norma, trim-to length 51.80 mm / 2.037"
Bullet: RWS SP, 4.6 g / 71 grains
C.O.L.: 63.3 mm / 2.492"

Max. Loads (no starting load given) and velocity:
N135: 1.54 g / 23.8 grains / 835 m/s / 2740 fps
N140: 1.66 g / 25.6 grains / 865 m/s / 2840 fps
N160: 1.96 g / 30.2 grains / 830 m/s / 2720 fps

This is a great cartridge for roedeer.
Enjoy shooting it.
What rifle?

Thanks a lot for that.
The rifle is an old Savage 1899 lever gun from about 1925.It has shot groups around one inch with the Norma factory ammo and I'm very happy with it. I need to reload now so I can afford to shoot it some more
