Hunting in Austria vs. Spain?
Hi Guys-

I'm considering doing a multi-species hunt this fall (maybe Ibex, Mouflon and Chamois?) and am looking for some guidance. I met an Austrian outfitter at DSC last weekend who seemed like a good guy. He hunts the Miesenbach area. His prices for basically equivalent animals were considerably lower than what I've seen in Spain. I also have talked with a lot of Spanish outfitters over the years, and am intrigued with the hunting offered there as well.

While I like to shoot good trophies, I don't have much interest in paying the trophy fees for Silver and Gold class animals. I'd be looking for more representative heads.

Ideally, I'd like to hunt all free-range animals, so I think that changes things as well.

I'm going to be bringing my wife with me, who will not be hunting, so entertainment for her is a consideration.

For those of you who have hunted both, do you have any thoughts you'd like to share? This will be my first hunting trip in Europe. My goal is to get out into the mountains a bit and experience European hunting. I much prefer spot and stalk hunting to sitting in a high seat. I'm thinking 7-8 days of hunting followed by some touring.

Very different styles of hunting, both traditional in their very own way.

In Spain, avoid fenced operations, this is just not that much fun unless of course a good monterĂa with a lot of shooting. Fences are usually in the South. Very good and challenging hunting in beautiful landscapes on the State Game reserves for most species.

Hunting in Spain in spite of the current crisis is still expensive.

Austria might offer a higher likelyhood of an ethical hunt with fair chase and some nice Jager traditions, especially in the mountains. In Spain, you need to be more selective.
