Hello all
I travel a lot with firearms and excessive charges is by bug bear.
I wonder can the moderator make a STICKY post on this forum so all members can contribute to what they know about their national carriers.
I am sure this will be a deciding factor when booking ticket for your next adventure to DARK places
So I will hit it off with the following :
British Airways
£50 pounds per item each sector
NOTE:
As of 1st April 2010 even though you book on line and have selected the option for sporting firearms, you must ring British Airways afterwards to inform them of serial numbers, Classification of firearms and also amoutn of ammunuication to be carried.
They will refuse your firearms if you have not call them seperately.
I am informed that they do not carry calibers over 40 calibers officially. Since I have firearms over this I declared it as 375 and got away with it - so watch out.
Ryan Air - They do not carry firearms officially but I know the IRISH shooting team personally and they are the only ones I know who flys with firearms with Ryanair. So avoid at all cost.
Easy Jet - £18.50 each firearm per sector. At Stanstead and Gatwick they DO not weight guns however I am informed at Manchester and Birmingham airport they weigh your firearms and charge over weight accoirdingly.

Not had any problems with weight etc.
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....
Swiss (Air) started charging extra handling fees for firearms last year. Additional fees apply, even if you are still inside your luggage weight limit including firearms and case... How much is charged can be seen here:

Malev (Hungarian) airlines also charges an additional handling fee for firearms. I'm not exactly sure how much??
Lufthansa has the following about firearms transportation on their website:

Delta has the following on their website:

. . . and where you're going probably has something to do with it, and don't forget if it's contracted out . . . and . . .
Case in point, last year, United Flight but run by Lufthansa, from FRA to USA, almost went without rifles because United didn't require pre-reg but Lufthansa refused to take them. Finally, after about 30 minutes back & forth between United and Luft we were able to "register" them with Luft, but of course, charge was about $150 for a rifle and shotgun in a Tuffpak.
I dunno, sometimes it's a piece a cake and no charges (Air Namibia is great!) and sometimes you lose . . . Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Aer Lingus charge 30 euro per case each way booked online[as fishing gear.their advice !] or 40 euro each way if you turn up on the day.

Trapper DaveVirgin seem to have a fairly clear policy:

When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 208cm (81in).
Air Baltic don't seem to charge extra unless you exceed baggage weight.
I usually e-mail them to confirm that I will be travelling with firearms.
Customs at Riga are brief with just a quick check of Serial No's against an EU Firearms Pass but LGW requires to see your UK Firearms License.

To be honest while I applaud the idea of this thread, firearms policy seems to change so much, individuals need to phone around them selves prior to booking rather than read possibly outdated info here..
As an example, I have flown from Manchester , and not had my firearms weighed. An when I did my research about travelling with firearms, BA never mentions an over .40 limitation.
The big thing was that airlines were not allowed to carry "weapons of war" and at different times certain people within BA have tried to class sporting rifles in military calibres as "weapons of war"
They were even trying to extend it to "similar" calibre so if 5.556mm Nato and 7.62mm Nto were banned, so was .223Rem and .308win...

as it,s spelt Angus.
But I did recently discover one airline flying out of Dublin that insists on make,model,serial number.length,weight of rifle,gross weight of rifle and case.
At this stage you are just about ready to fly with someone,anyone else.Then you are told it is 40 euro each way but consistently they dont collect it in Dublin.
The checkin Stasi at the other end collect the 40 euro for the return trip however.

I went to Canada from Gatwick and couldnt have been happier with the service from the 3 Airlines I used.On the return things went south,Ive landed from an internal in Toronto,Ive collected my luggage and rifle without problems, and gone to check in for my International flight back to the UK,I checked my case(cloths) and rifle but they wouldnt let me fly home with my ammo,this particular lady was addament that I couldnt fly with it,when I showed her the airline policy about ammo etc she said that it was out of date and that i shouldnt have been able to fly with it,and that the rules changed whilst i was away!!,anyway to cut it short I told them that if I have to leave my ammo behind then I will want compenasting for it,they said that wouldnt be a problem.I left the ammo behind got all the offical paper work stamp from the airline and got my compensation of £93 for 26rounds of handloads!! plus 10% of my next flight with IGLU.com.
I have flown nearly 20 times since this happened,with various airlines without incident.
